Echo a lot of the sentiments already stated but this is difficult. He signed a new contract in the summer which I doubt (mainly due to his age and experience) will not have a clause. This interest will pique his agents interest and he'll be asking the club if they value him at say £15 million then why aren't they paying him a wage in line with that value. This will lead new contract talks which will involve a clause if signed. If he keeps playing the way he's playing then I think we'll be lucky to still have him at the club this time next year.
A midfield 4 of Odour, Kane, Palmer and Brittain doesn't exactly scream out 'comfortable mid table' does it. We'll see how it pans out, but if we see worst case scenario, Ismael will go the same way as previous coaches and we'll end up with another coach bringing in players he wants and more current players being added to the list of deadwood in the squad.
Not sure I agree with this. Peterborough won't have been paying Toney a salary in line with a £4-10m player - Brentford did. Similarly Brentford wouldn't have offered Watkins a salary for a £25-30m player - Villa did.
I'm not normally one to say we shouldn't accept any less than x amount etc, but this is one occasion where we'd be fools to accept anything less than 8 figures. Styles is a phenomenal talent, and has a long time left on his deal. We could easily reject a big bid for him now, and if he kicks on to the end of the season, get offered even more in the summer. I'd be rejecting everything now, and starting a bidding war in the summer. If he moves into the middle of the park to replace James, I can see him getting double figures in terms of goals for the season.
The difference being, Styles has a long time left on his contract. The board has never been in this position before.
We've never been in this position before, where interest for a player with several years left on their contract is attracting interest. I understand some of the criticism the board faces, but honestly, they're not going to accept £5m for a player with 3.5 years left on his current deal. If they do, they deserve all the criticism they get.
You'd still get the usual suspects spinning the club line of the player wanted to leave he forced the move the board had no choice etc etc etc. I've an horrible feeling the boards eyes will see only pound / dollar signs and not the bigger picture and we will see an all too familiar scenario playing out over the next few weeks. Just replace Bree Winnall and Houriane with Mowatt, Styles and James (I know we didn't sell James he wasn't our player but we made the decision not to extend his loan) and before I'm accused of wanting the club to fail I really really hope I'm wrong and the board surprise me and probably 95% if the fan base.
I've recently wondered about our player valuations and how we actually know what to ask or when to accept. If you take it in reverse and the (in)famous spreadsheet. When we sign players it's passing%, age, etc etc and loads more attributes. So it begs the question, have we, or do we have a similar system regards valuations? For example player X was sold by club Y to club Z for £5 million. The spreadsheet shows our player scored more, has a similar length of contract left and is a year younger. Our players spreadsheet stats show he's better in 85% of its criteria.......... you get my drift......... so you'd like to think that our valuation would be above the £5 mill ?!? I know there's other factors involved and its a simplistic example but I'd like to know if it's something they use.
Yes it would but doubt that Brentford would be that financially imprudent to throw al that at one player. No I suspect they’re looking to make another Ivan Toney type of deal. £4/5 m now doubling up with future add ons. Well they can go suck a lemon as far as I’m concerned
I don’t see how a club like Brentford or ourselves can spend that kind of money through Covid & stay within FFP rules.? That new ground wasn’t cheap & there aren’t even any fans going in.. They might find themselves doing a Bolton if they’re not careful. Wealthy owner or not? No way am I smart enough to know the ins & outs of this crap, just speculating..
Sell Styles for £10-15 million, offer Mowatt a better contract that he'll actually sign and bring in Whiteman. Raise the profile of the club in the process. Then I wake up.
