Beat me to it. Haven't lived in Houghton for nearly 30 years (and didn't live there until 5 years after that picture was taken), but I recognized Darfield church in the background. The other option might have been Dearne Valley, but it did look more like Houghton.
I regularly walk up to the rocks up there (when its dry). - never realised there were vent pipes underneath but it doesn't surprise me.
As 14 year old kids we used to sup up there on Fridays nights, we used to throw rubbish in the gaps of those rocks and then light it on fire to keep warm for the night. I also never knew there were vents underneath them, but my grandad god rest his soul, once found out we were lighting fires up there (for heat by the way, we weren’t going out to cause mischief as such) and he said at the time you don’t realise how lucky you’ve been. I never knew what he meant but you’ve just cleared that up.
