Well I’d say it was different; you can think whatever you like.

She’s just telling it like it is. ‘British strain’ would have been more appropriate, but you’re reading the daily express, whose agenda has just sucked you in, whole.
Trump used it as a stick to beat China. If you can’t see that far, there’s not much I can do to help.

The difference is trump was deliberately saying it like that. Chi-na

Merkel isn't English, English isn't her first language. From the article you posted there is nothing at all to suggest that she meant anything other than British strain.

    A few key differences really.

    - Trump not only referred to it as the China virus but also, mockingly, "Kung Flu" on a number of occasions.
    - He has insinuated that China had been intentionally responsible for the pandemic more than once.
    - He was obviously using that anger to fuel his populist agenda.
    - Trump has been overtly critical of China throughout his time as president, in particular during their trade war with each other, and would benefit from any economic detriment they might suffer.

Regardless of whether Merkel spoke out of turn (not particularly sure she did) we can't pretend that Trump's comments about China throughout this crisis haven't been problematic. Worlds apart really.

Merkel was in a conference call with her German colleagues. This could just as easily be a translation gone wild.

I am in agreement, Merkel has her faults...but casual racism or nationalism isn't among them.

The irony of all this is that it's only called the 'uk strain' because British scientists were smart enough to discover it first, when in all probability it was already present in many countries around the world

I suspect the same could be said for the “South African” strain. or is it just coincidence that these strains originated in the two countries best equipped to recognise them*?
Another possibility is that there are many more strains popping up around the world in countries where they just haven’t got the brains to find them.

    * by best countries I mean best in the western world

If she called it a 'British virus' then she's a fool for doing so. From past knowledge of Merkel I can't see it though. No way is she on a par with orange man. I suspect the Express has elaborated so we can get angry at Johnny foreigner again
