Very interesting. I know nothing on the subject but that certainly sounds like a more likely reason for the name than the surname of some bloke who really didn't have anything to do with it.
The vet asked if I'd looked for my lost dog. I said "I Sikh him here, I Sikh him there, I Sikh him everywhere"
Yep! Most times I post I try to stimulate debate. Also the times I may have resorted to invective is ALWAYS onlòy ever in response to someone making personal jibes or s to insults themselves. Mansfield Red's initial post started with a subtle implication that my OP post was racist motivated i.e. . "Those uppity blacks, getting offended by racist words..." I am afraid you are wrong on two counts.. " middle aged "?? (if only) & "Angry" ? Why is it that there are certain people on here who argue that they are clearly 100% right and anyone who disagrees with them is wrong? I stated it was, only in my opinion in my post and was intended to provoke debate. one or tow then jumped in. The same people who when they are in a clear minority amongst the larger population still argue they are right, which is fair enough BUT then go on to state that they are right because everyone else is thick, naive, racist, selfish etc. etc. A Maine Coon only becomes offensive when someone thinks it is a racial slur and when I doubt most cat breeders have ever for one second made that connection and doubt anyone else has. All that said, it appears on this BB (at least amongst those who have responded to this thread) I appear to be in the minority so will concede the argument and particularly the detailed post from Troff that throws a light on the history of this particular dispute.
I don't see the personal jibes from Watcher of the Skies here: I wasn't implying that your post was motivated by racism, just that referring to a "vociferous minority" in this case is misguided. I clearly said that I thought the motivation behind your post was to find a reason to cry "PC gone mad" regardless of merit. The fact that you've not really engaged with any of the substantive points I've raised doesn't really dispel that.
Reminds me of when I worked at Vauxhall and they brought out the new Vauxhall/Opel Cascada, which they didn't realise translates into 'p1ssing' in Spanish.
care to post the whole of the WOTS thread as I would not have responded in that way to the small extract you have posted. look at what preceded it. Also Worrying that you can be bothered to search through posts to try and prove a point.
Why is it worrying? Surely it should be welcome that people provide evidence in their arguments. Plus there aren't many posts containing the word "fuckwit" so it took all of 5 seconds to find via search. I note you're still not responding to the actual points I've made in this thread, but that doesn't really surprise me given past form.
And yet you have not responded to my request to post the whole thread that you used a small extract' from as an 'example'. Pot-kettle. Incidentally What points have you made other than a rather facile reference to female Genitalia not worthy of a response? EDIT I notice a number of your left wing pals have used the word quite frequently unprovoked and yet you dont seem to take them to task over it. Strange! NOT!
Why is it not worthy of a response? Would you be happy to see C*nt Cheese on the shelves if the company had been founded by Edward C*nt (even though it transpires that isn't the origin of the Coon name?) It's a relevant and legitimate question in the context of the thread. There's also the point that it's not "obliterating his legacy" as there would be any number of ways of naming the company after him that avoid the word coon. The reason I don't pull other people up is because they don't repeatedly try to take the moral high ground about not resorting to personal insults.
Oooh look! another PC gone mad thread started by....you guessed it folks, Tekkytyke! I don't believe it!
I may have read it wrong but @Tekkytyke did say that the majority of posters and Troff's post in particular had changed his mind on the matter.
