Unless Ironside did that on a regular basis I was at that match, it's about the only thing I remember.
He weren`t the best, lets just say I bet he`s glad he aint playing narrdays what with social media. I was there also and I must admit its the only thing I recalled too.
Roy! He upset me twice that weekend. Firstly at the game and then the daft bugger did it again, on the telly, on sunday. That's after my mum had tried to placate me, assuring me he surely couldn't do it on consecutive days. But then came the magnificently named Brian Arblaster. I liked him.
It was bad enough watching it the first time round. Unless you want it to show all the current “so and so is the worst player ever to play for Barnsley” brigade that they don’t know what they’re talking about.
It wasn’t all bad with players like Big Winnie and Eddie Loyden and John Bettany, not to mention the great Jimmy Robson. I’d love to see more of Robson on film playing for us and, even more so, the Thomas/Evans partnership that hoisted us out of the Fourth Division doldrums. I only have newspaper cuttings and programs with their pictures to keep those memories alive.
You couldn’t fault some of them for effort and as you say there were some good players, but aside from the 67:68 promotion the mid-60’s to 70’s were pretty bleak for us, weren’t they? The best I can say (started going in 1971) is that it made the two promotions ten years later so special and makes me thankful now, however poor we are some years, that we haven’t gone the same way as some of our “big” rivals from those years. Grimsby, Halifax, Stockport, Darlington to name a few.
But for Geoff Buckle and Ernest Dennis’s £10,000 cash injection we would have gone to the wall. Dramatic, I know, but the 1966 crisis was very real. That money bought us Thomas and Evans and the transformation was remarkable.
In Barry Murphy’s book he says that in 1966/67 (I think) they had one football and couldn’t train with it in case they needed it for the weekend. It is remarkable the transformation the following year.
I think it might have been when the fences went up following a bad spate of hooliganism. Not sure when that was.
it was ok Barry Davis said the pitch was green so I was o k, the scarfs on show though and the crowd, some young adolescent shouting "COME ON NOW BARNSLEY LETS SEE SOME SKIIILLLLLLLLL!",lovely stuff, not one person looking at a phone, all just enjoying the moment , terrible elastic and shorts quality though
