If every player received a 10 fold wage increase we would still be below the average pay for premier league clubs. Last filed accounts showed a total payroll of £8.1m, the average wage bill in the premier league two years ago was £158m. The lowest wage bill in the Premier league was 7x that of Barnsley’s. The gap between league one and the championship is large, £6m in central distribution but the gap in money terms to the premier league is over £100m. The premier league represents an awful lot that is wrong with football.
Wonder how this would affect us if we did manage to get up? Where could we add the needed media facilities(Between East and North/West and Ponty?) and would we need to remove some seats to allow for camera positions, etc? Floodlights shouldn't be an issue, though(unless we would need special planning permission for them)...
This. There's going to be many twists and turns between now and the end of the season and no guarantees we will make the play offs. The only focus should be on the next league game but I can imagine a few on here will have an absolute meltdown if we don't make it.
I do agree, but I think we're at least close enough for people to be getting giddy talking about 'what if'. and I think we all need summat to get a bit giddy about
I don’t think there’s anything wrong in having a discussion on what if . As far as I’m aware most posts aren’t speculating on promotion or counting chickens etc , Most of them are hypothetical and inquisitive . Nothing wrong with dreaming or thinking what if , after all we are the Daydream Believers
Which is why I wouldn't try and keep up with them, not immediately anyway. Improve in small increments, with the minimum plan being to be able to push for automatic promotion the season after if we were relegated. The facilities should be where we invest most in one go. Buy and improve the stadium, training, and academy facilities to ensure the season has a legacy, and hopefully improve the quality of young players we produce. But I think we may stand a good chance of staying up in season 1. It's the second season syndrome that seems to do for clubs of our size...
Obviously the exact finances are unknown.. but i would personally try to spend the windfall from the promotion to benefit the long term prospects of the club. Invest in the infrastructure such as the media facilities, the advertising and the general look of the ground. To enable all new revenue streams to be maximised and utilised in the long term. Obviously building a new west stand is unrealistic in the timeframe, but start the process, fill the corner between ponty and west. Also, look at house the training and rehab facilities can be improved. This can enable us to enhance the quality of existing players and will improve the appeal to potential players when they visit. Build the fou dations of the club to mean its not a once in a generation achievement, make it so it can be possible to achieve and build moving forward. Some investment would be required in the playing squad, that goes without saying, but i personally would try to invest in the building blocks of the club to ensure its longer term success. This has one main downfall.. the supporters. Fans are generally going to want new players and money spending on the team, so it would take some explaining and alot of patience if after 2 months of the season we were bottom without a win...
Agree, Sheffield United had to spend £5million on upgrading Media facilities when they were promoted. It would probably be similar for us. I would suggest using the East Stand for that purpose, would be better. Listening to Dane's interviews a couple of weeks ago,he intimidated that provisional planning had already taken place on all things that have to be done if you are promoted to the Premier league.
Up Down Up Down Up (stay up for 2 or 3 years to build up the cash reserves) Down Up (as above)... etc That way we can build our Stature both on and off the field. But then again, if it's that simple...
Have you seen Bournemouth’s ground? They played in the premiership. We will need some investment in the playing staff though. Starting with DK and Mowatt, but also some more young superstars.
My sole ambition for a Greed League season would be to get more points than Derby did. Beyond that - tek the money an run
I'm still gutted about that Beeding Ipswich P O final in 2000, couldn't suffer another final heartbreak lol
Tartan perimeter New West Stand Replace faded seats Investment in academy Upgrade facilities around the rest of the stands Build the corners, video boards like WBA, Rangers etc Buy Dike. Give VI £35m kitty. I'm happy with that, be a mad season with plenty of cash in the bank for the future.
We wouldn’t have any choice in the matter. If we do go up the ground will need A LOT of work to get it compliant with premiership needs. Everything to do with tv, var and press coverage will need a major upgrade for starters. I very much doubt the old stand will still be there come the kick off. Sheffield U had a lot of ground updates to do in quick sticks two years ago and we are certainly no better placed now than they were back then.
If, and its a big 'If', we get promoted what we do next will be entirely dependant on where our owners think their best shot at making some profit is. They are after all business people with little to no affiliation to Barnsley. I'm not decrying that, while ever our (fans & board) interests are aligned I think we can happily co-exist. However, being realistic they are not in it for the love of all things Barnsley. They will have to decide where they think their best shot at making money is. Is it: Go all out for trying to stay in the Premier League. Very risky and very difficult to see that we could sustain a long period in the Premier league, although not impossible (Burnley). Sustainable long term growth & reasonable profit margins. Plan for yo yo seasons (my choice) same model, but occasionally buying at Waitrose rather than always at Aldi. This carries a lot of risks not that easy to repeat. Recoup some profit immediately from the Prem revenue & then let nature take its course (start back at the beginning). Personally think the second option makes sense as there is a lot of money to be made developing players at the top end of the Championship (Ollie Watkins). Premier league clubs will pay over the odds for a championship player if his team is at the right end of the table. Callum Styles plying his trade at play off level for 3 years is worth 5-10 times Callum Styles plying his trade just above the relegation zone.
Burnley yo yo’d a couple of times before they established themselves and even now have to fight being in the bottom third
