Can't say any more than others really.
My abiding memory of him was on the Local News documentary after the Bradford City game, promotion 97. He was soaked in champagne and just said to the camera 'we're not little old Barnsley anymore. We're Premier League now'

    RIP and sincere condolences

Your dad was my first real hero. He was the first player I remember seeing in red and white who I felt could literally win a game on his own, as he did on more than 1 occasion. My heart sank when I read your opening post, and I immediately felt a sense of great loss. However, my loss is nothing as compared to your own. Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss.

Devastating news. Winnie was a hero when we gained promotion to the 3rd Division. The first time I had anything to celebrate as a Barnsley fan. Who could forget that hat trick against Watford 3-0 with a centre half bagging all three. Took charge of the youth set up where we were Premier League in terms of ability, often reaching at least the semi final stage of the Youth Cup. Brought through players like Watson, Eaden, Liddle, Morgan, Moses, Agnew, Tiler etc. Hope the club and fans will get to honour him at some stage. RIP Eric and condolences to all the family.

So very sad for Winnie’s family - and all Reds fans, particularly those of us whose first visits to Oakwell were when he was captain. If I may:

    - first team player at 17
    - first team captain at 19
    - would have played first division football but for injury
    - defensive partnership with Pat Howard - no prisoners taken (both good footballers, though)
    - the Ponty chanting “Winnie, Winnie, Winnie, Winnie” as he made his way up for a corner.
    - George Hamstead dropping the ball in exactly the right place for Winnie to head it in
    - top scorer in the 67/68 promotion season - from centre half
    - that hat trick to overturn high-flying Watford’s 2-0 lead. Including a flying volley.
    - coach, assistant manager, manager
    - Danny’s right hand man - and arguably the brains behind our promotion to the promised land
    - a true football man

Will never forget being an eight or nine year old kid at some kind of event in the social club. Winnie passed me and took time out to speak to me. Our captain. How thrilled was I? Modern superstars take note.

    A true Reds legend.

Dreadful news, I'm so sorry for you @Terry Nutkins and for your family, its a sad day hearing this news.

Your Dad was a hero for my own late Father when he was a player, and likewise for me as a coach and sometimes manager of the football club that we all love. You just have to look at the calibre of young player that he brought through, when there were no fancy facilities other than 2 muddy training pitches and the Northern Intermediate League. You look at the style of play that he coached, culminating in that magical Saturday 26th April 1997, when he also acknowledged where "we" had come from amongst the elation of promotion, all endorsed by former players and managers too, the high regard he is held in is clear and worthy.

There will always be a part of Barnsley FC, a part of all of our memories of our time watching Barnsley FC, that is Eric Winstanley. The club is a better one for him having been part of it.

I am devastated by this news. I have been away from Darfield for a good few years and was aware where he lived. I was proud to live in Darfield along with Eric.
He is the rock of BFC and will be sorely missed.
    Love to all.

Oh ********. So sorry Terry. Your personal loss is not something we can really understand but if it’s any kind of comfort your Dad was genuinely loved by all who follow BFC. An outstanding contribution to the Club and a man hugely significant to the Club and the development of so many players.
Look after yourself and your family. Take care.

So sorry for your loss. My dad has always had him in his all time 11 and was lucky enough to watch him play. To me he was big part of our greatest ever era helping Danny.

Sincere and heartfelt regards TN to you and all your family - I think you already know how much he means to all of his extended “family” at Oakwell.

    I'm gutted for you.

I am too young to have ever seen him play, but I understand just how much he contributed to the magic of 1997.

For him to continue to love the club after he got Spackmaned, says such a lot about him. Not only a legend for his playing, coaching and managing, but he loved us as much as anyone ever has.

So sorry for your loss. You are among friends here.
