Question : if England played the same style as the Reds under VI, would they be more successful or less? And which players would suit the system? Just curious after watching that friendly....
Like watching a struber team. Passing it around the back at home to a side who is parking the bus. Maybe Im old-fashioned but I prefer the centre halves to get rid of the ball when under pressure and try to play it forward.
Massive difference between us and England. We play teams that attack and believe they can beat us. England play a lot of teams that just sit behind the ball with little intent on going forward.
Was saying to my father in law earlier, England are so difficult to watch these days, the modern way of playing the game is as dull as ditch water, can,t remember the last time i watched a prem game for the full 90, i,m not a great fan of our style of play to be honest but this lot will get the game stopped, when was the last time England played fast flowing football and put a team to the sword?, every game seems a struggle...
With the pace we have out wide in Rashford, Sancho, Sterling we should look to get the ball forward quickly. Against defensive sides we are too pedestrian. There is no real initiative to break them down.
Actually I'd say Birmigham, Derby, Millwall, Cardiff, Blackburn, Boro and Stoke all came to Oakwell with the aim to nulify us. Some more than others but none og them came to attack really.
To some extent, yes, but none to the extent that a lot of teams do against England. England also have too many players with technical ability that wouldn't suit that style (Grealish, Foden, etc).
That's a great post. I've sat and had a think of the last time I really enjoyed an England game - the best I come up was the Panama game in the World Cup. If I'm honest that was probably because I watched it in a large group at a BBQ, had had a few beers and Stones scored a brace. Maybe the fact that I'm not drinking in a group of mates is to blame - but I think you're right - the modern game just isn't that entertaining anymore.
You could easily play a front 3 of Rashford, Calvert-Lewin & Watkins who would all suit the Barnsley style.
Have to agree with certain sentiments regarding modern football. I just can't bring myself to watch England these days. I went along with a mate to Hull v Man City a few years ago. It ended up 4-2 but, despite six goals, I found the experience tawdry. Admittedly; I was hungover from the previous night, but the game as a spectacle was really crap imo.
On a slightly different tack I think that Sancho must play a hugely different way for his club side for Man Utd to want to pay nearly £100m as his England appearances don’t reflect this.
You could argue that England did play a bit that way under Graham Taylor. At international level, it just resulted in our kicking possession away to top-flight players, who weren't easily going to give it back. Taylor's methods worked brilliantly at Lincoln City and at a higher level at Watford as well. He had adapted them a bit in his time at Villa, but the idea that this method would work better for England doesn't bear scrutiny from the Graham Taylor era.
My summarised opinion of current football is that there are managers/teams who are afraid to lose and managers/teams who purely target victory. the former gives you boring side to side football the latter the excitement and goals we all crave. the former includes teams such as England, Brighton, palace, brim, direby etc the latter Brazil, Citeh, Leeds, Barnsley
