He is someone I would have loved to see play. An unbelievable finisher and very funny on Saint & Greavsie.
According to my late father, the greatest finisher he'd ever seen. A true legend of the game and those of us who were into our football prior to the PL era were lucky enough to see him play or chat football every week on TV, with the late Ian St John. Not really the thread for it, but it rankles with me how his playing record has seemingly been consigned to history when pundits and commentators talk about records now, they only start counting from 1992. Top flight football's highest ever goalscorer and a genuine legend of football. A sad day for the game. RIP Jimmy.
That is really sad news. One of the all time greats and so unlucky to have missed out on being in the team that won the World Cup
Sad news but I echo a few points from above. He would would be in my top 10 players who I'd like to see from another era as my Dad always uses him as a reference point.
I'd like to echo the posts of @CarltonRed and @dreamboy3000 I remember from his TV show with Ian St John as well. RIP Jimmy Greaves
My favourite Saint and Greavsie memory was that preview of our FA Cup Sixth Round tie against Liverpool. Going through our team he noted that: “Gwyn Thomas - could be Welsh. Ron and Paul Futcher - I think they might be brothers. Winston Campbell - he might have curly hair”. The woke brigade would be all over him now but there was no malice intended. Just his sense of fun on a highly entertaining football show.
Just by typing his name in to Twitter plenty of clubs have sent condolences. I suspect every professional club in the country will tweet about it because of how highly regarded he was.
His ability to be in the right place at the right time was uncanny and he couldn’t explain it himself ! The best goal scorer England have ever had ( arguably )
No one will have a bad word to say about him, although some Arsenal fans might not have felt the love for him when he was banging them in for Spurs
