    Most sports fans in England, Wales and Scotland say they would be comfortable with their club signing a gay player, according to a BBC Radio 5 live survey.
    It found 82% of supporters would have no issue with a gay player.
    However, 8% of football fans said they would stop watching their team.

    The 8% bit are probably the ones who still think it ok to shout racist abuse at black players as well. And yes, there's plenty of those types at Oakwell.

    Unfortunately, the mere fact that there are no openly gay players currently plying their trade in any of the English leagues would suggest it's very relevant. We've slowly made moves to address racism in football grounds (although isolated incidents still occur), homophobia in football grounds is still deemed acceptable. Go to any Brighton match and listen to opposition team's chants, then ask the question again.

    Presumably the 8% dont go to the cinema or watch any drama on TV, either after all there are quite a few gays in the acting profession

    I really find it hard to get my mind round anyone who has such intolerance for someone who is in some small way different to them - the same goes for racist and sexist behaviour - for which I expect the same 8 % are involved.

    The only thing I can say to the 8% is stay away from football grounds if you feel that way. I dont want to be associated with them

    I think home fans would be quite supportive, it'd be away fans who'd dish out the abuse.

    Even some people who aren't homophobic in general would probably join in with chants after a few beers if they think it'll wind up an opposition player. Just been realistic

    Why would someone boo or verbally abuse a gay sportsman or woman?

    Imagine doing the same to a work colleague who was gay.

    Some people really do love in the dark ages.

    It's a shame the idiot 8% in the survey will give gay football players a reason to still not come out instead of focusing on the vast majority of people who would be supportive.

    All we want from our football players is for them to give 100% for us. Sexuality shouldn't come into it.

    had the question been 'Are you happy with your club signing a straight player' we would think the questioner to be bonkers.

    So why is it o.k. to ask the question about a gay player?

    Straight players don't 'come out' and announce their sexuality so why on earth should a gay player be subtly pressured to do that.

    We have all got gay and straight family members, friends, work colleagues. We get on better with some than others - their sexuality has probably nothing to do with that.

    Lets play devils advocate a bit... the survey appears to be totally anonymous...
    So what happens if they 8% were against homosexuality due to religous or culteral reasons eg.. devot catholics,muslims,parts of africa...

    Not every survey is as black and white as it appears...

    So what! even if your religious beliefs think of homosexuality as wrong , it doesnt give you any rights in this country to discriminate.

    In any case those who take the view for deeply held religious beliefs must stop watching all football straight away. The devout religious reasons you cite would also apply to fornication and probably alcohol so any side that has a player that drinks or who may be engaging in sex outside marriage must be shunned just the same
