If anyone is interested it was the 20th anniversary of the film Brassed Off being released at the cinema, yesterday so had to watch it for the 100th?? (lots) time last night. Got to be one on the best films ever!

Everytime I watch it I get the same emotions laughter, anger and sadness all rolled into one.

Having played cricket in Grimethorpe for many years, I always notice all the characters walking the wrong way on their way to The Colliers Arms (the Red Rum locally!) and always let everyone know this!!

Also found out that there will be a special 21st Birthday screening of the film, at the Royal Albert Hall, on 9th May 2017 where the Grimethorpe Colliery Band will be accompanying the film playing live, so just had to book some tickets!!

This is quite ironic and fitting, as part of the film is set at the Albert Hall but the producers of the film could not get permission to film there so had to use Birmingham Town Hall instead.

Am I the only one who cries during Danny's speech in the Albert Hall? :)

Wow I never knew that. Its a great film though - with added interest if you know Grimethorpe reasonably well.
Unfortunately its a bit too close to home in many ways.

Lowering the tone a bit was it only me that thought Tara Fizgerald was really hot in that film !

I have a confession to make. I'm from Grimethorpe but have never seen the film!

Oh no JamDrop you must watch it!

Had you left the village before the film was made?

I think you have a hole in your cinematic education - you really should watch it - but keep a few tissues or a hanky handy as you will do well to get though it without a single tear

I'm not from Grimethorpe but my parents were both from there originally and I still have relatives there so recognised quite a bit of it.

Haven't seen the film for a few years and now wanting to watch it again.

i do that as well - given I lived not far from the Red Rum for the first 28 years of my life (although it wasn't a pub for most of that time!)

My mum's aunty lived in Grimey.

Used to go there as a kid. Can't really remember much about it though.

Good film, Pete Postlethwaite was a brilliant actor.

No, I was only 9 at the time and I lived there up until going to uni (well, I still classed myself as living there then as I always intended on moving back until I met my husband in my final year). I know my parents watched it but I haven't seen it.

Was that the real name of the chippy prior to the film or just for the film?

Real wasn't it? I don't know about before the film but it was definitely it's name after the film

I'm watching it now for the first time.

I've got the tissues out and I thought I'd make it interesting so I've got some lube too. I hope you haven't given me false hopes about this film.

Nope, made up. The sign stayed up for the next ten years but the shop remained empty and unused.

    Stand by for heresy

And with the greatest respect to Pete Postlethwaite but I cannot fcking stand that film.

I just find it patronising and twee.

    There you go.

So it wasn't open after the film? I used to have a little chuckle to myself at its name every time I went passed and never realised it was never open. I feel cheated

I never remember it being open. I do remember it being boarded up and looking horrible for years and years.
