Should be patient because the way Australia are going our greatest ever overseas player Darren Lehmann will be available shortly.

As soon as Jason said he was going home he was the first one I thought of. Surely he will see Yorkshire as a bigger job :D

He'll certainly have the fans behind him from the off. Gale has been a good club servant but I have no idea what his coaching potential is.

Why so underwhelmed? We've been so successful recently, he knows what works, what doesn't and how all the players succeed. Perfect for continuation in my opinion

To be fair to Gale I watched a behind the scenes documentary and he was the vocal authorative voice and clearly hugely respected by the players. Gillespie was very hands off but created the atmosphere for success. Could Gale recreate that though? Or do it his own way?

My main concern is who would be captain because I don't think any of the current team are ready yet. There's an argument that they need an experience overseas player in the middle order. Maybe as captain?

Does this mean he will stop playing?

His batting form has been on the same for a couple of seasons now.

I would consider Lees as a long term captain.

Yeah our record in limited overs with Gale as captain was poor and at the longest format he averaged 21 with the bat last season and gave us our lowest finish for a few seasons so the only reason he'd be getting the job is because he's already at the club. Lehmann is struggling but anyone would with the expectation levels Australia have when you have a middle order of guys like Marsh and Voges who just aren't good enough. He'd do better for us and might be able to turn around the batting form of the past few years for Gale that's been getting worse.

I'd be surprised if he was player coach, and even more surprised if he continues as captain (although IIRC they offered something similar to Chris Adams in 2006).

I think Gale gets a lot of unfair criticism though. In his last 3 seasons prior to the one just gone he averaged 43.04, 43.23 and 38.70. All whilst being captain which often does effect performance. I'm not saying he's in the class of Root, Bairstow, or Balance but those are strong figures and he is obviously an excellent captain. Last year he'd be the first to admit was poor with the bat (although he was hardly alone). Whether that reflects decline or a blip, who knows?

Personally I don't think Lees is ready yet, and needs to concentrate on establishing himself as the top quality player he could be. But I'm not sure there's another option.

Biggest problem is that when they are good enough and experienced enough to be captain, they'll be playing for England.... Root should be captain, but he's always on International duty.
