The largest privately owned house in Europe. You can come and look around my house and garden every day if the government give me 7.5 Million.

It's marvellous news that such a treasure will survive.
Trouble is, we've heard it all before and there's always been disappointment. I really hope it goes ahead.

well its a start I guess

but apparently over £40 million is the required amount to sort it out. You can bet that had it been a Royal residence then it would have been sorted years ago.

I doubt it would have been as Buckingham palace is a royal residence and it hasn't been sorted out yet

It makes me laugh. This is marvellous news that a treasure will survive but yet fixing Buckingham Palace up is an outrage. (For the record, I think both of them being fixed is good news).

Not against preserving our heritage etc, However, it is down my list of priorities of public spending. Stop capping local Govt spending at the appalling rate it is and allow councils' to fund things properly like care for the aged and mental and physical disability issues.

Whilst it's welcomed I found it absurd how smug he was saying it.

Like he's done the north a favour

7.5 million in his entire budget is like me finding 10p in the street and giving it to an OAP and expecting them the be greatful.

Meanwhile they will continue to ***** billions on shitty unnecessary projects.

It's coming back to the Estate. It's the village's worst kept secret. The grant may stop the development of half of Hoyland Common, but I doubt it...
It will secure the purchase of the big house, but another £40m is required to structurally secure and refurb it to it's former splendour. And that's before putting the treasures back in.

It's a good thing. But was also being lined up for EU money, which of course we can whistle for now...
The area has done very well out of Europe, in terms of heritage and cultural grants. Not that many cared much for that, when casting their vote...

Well said. I blame the local labour (predominantly) politicians who totally failed to tell the local people the financial benefits to the area of being in the eu

Straight question. In this age of choices. Would you rather spend limited funds on these things on on social care which is in absolute crisis.

Course I would (on social care). I was just highlighting that we had a thread on here the other day about it being an outrage that Buckingham Palace was being done up (that thousands of people come to this country specifially to visit every year and bring a lot of money to the country) but yet this is marvellous news because it's in the North.

Well here in the UK it's just put a £122 billion black hole in the nations finances so it's pretty much on our minds I guess.
