Is it just me or has connor started playing a much deeper role in midfield ?

More and more he seems to be stood near the centre backs getting the ball off them rather than trying to influence the game further forward.

If this instruction has come from hecky then he needs to have a rethink.

Or is connor doing what he thinks will get him to irelands final squad rather than continuing to do what got him the recognition in the first place ?

It's fair enough if you're playing a three man midfield, but we just don't have anyone in the middle of the pitch when he drops deep.

With Scowen he has to drop deep. Scowen runs with ball and goes on little bursts leaving huge holes in the centre.

Morsey much better next to Hourihane.

Scoring goals is the best way for his country to notice him so his current position being as deep as it is probably hindering his chances of making a squad cut.

I agree, Morsey suits Connor's game better. I like Scowen but it does sometimes feel that instead of 2 in the middle, we have 1 forward, and one back.

Connor has got to stop taking these stupid 5 yard sideways free kicks when an opponent is less than 5 yards away. Last year he'd have blasted it at the offending player, and won a free kick / booking.

Not his best game tonight, Connor, but he's our main man, so hopefully the sniffer scouts will have retreated. #alwayslookonthebrightside

Its because we don't have Alfie Mawson anymore.

I thought the same! Thank god visiting scouts will back off now!

Poor game all round. Look nervous and bar Watkins no one seemed confident on the ball. Defensively naive combined with some bad luck and it was just one of those awful days.

We'll bounce back though. Trust in Hecky.

Final point today... Wish Hammill would play like he had something to prove again. He's playing like he's the star attraction and his tracking back is minimal. With Yiadom, as much as I like him, defensively naive at times we are weak on the left when teams break quickly.

He tracked back quite a bit I thought. Worked hard.

The issue is that as good as Yiadom has been he's quite often on his weaker foot. We shot ourselves in the foot expecting White to play more than 25 games.

agree. Genuine left back competition needed in January. Think a quality left back adds so much more balance to the team

One of the worst decisions of the summer. I like Aidy but he was always going to spend weeks out of action.

Needs a better and more complimentary partner than Scowen. They are a poor fit together.

It's just a different way of attacking a team.

Hourihane drops deep, 2 centre backs push wider making a back 3. Full backs push on & Watkins & Hammill cut inside to try & cause chaos.

To be fair it's worked plenty of times especially for Bree down the right wing.

Saw Liverpool do it lots with Gerrard dropping into the defence the season they had Suarez & nearly won the league. When you've got such a good passer it makes sense.

People get obsessed with formations but it's the little moves you make within a formation that often makes the difference.
