To be fair to him he probably had the worst group of players from any era to pick from when he was England manager. Always thought he was very good at club level though.

A decent and principled man. Never compromised his own standards even in the midst of the media frenzy when he was England manager. He also never forgot the broader game as a whole, partly I think because he did his groundwork in the lower divisions and understood the challenges and the beauty of the game at every level.
