They will never ever learn will they. Much as I admire this new process of bringing on youth it will mean that we will never reach the top tier of football ever again sadly.
We only reached it 20 years since because we had a team based around experienced journeymen like Hendrie and wilkinson who weren't wanted by supposed bigger sides and a chairman who dared to dream at the time.
We need that mentality back at board level to ever reach those dizzy heights again.

Sadly times have changed in 20 years and so has football. Aston villa got 40 million for been **** last season and getting relegated we got a fraction of that for promotion.

Agreed but we will never get that golden egg parachute payment if we continue to operate with a corner shop mentality sadly. Barnsley fc = open all hours! G, G, Granville!

A bit confused. Are you suggesting we scrap our strategy and assemble a team of ageing journeyman who have nothing to lose? I think you're being incredibly harsh tbh. The progress we have made over the last 12 months has been phenomenal. That's the only reason why there's all this interest in our players. If anything, our development has been too good and we haven't had the foresight to sort contracts. But hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Sam forced a move, and we're looking at 6-8m for two players who are out of contract in 3 months.

I don't think it's got anything to do with ambition. We've got no chance of competing financially with Clubs such as Aston Villa.

Did I or did I not say I admired the philosophy adopted for bringing on youth? I said I did I believe.
My point is we don't dare to dream. I'd settle for letting them both go for nowt and possibly having a go at the playoffs as the clubs already got 15 million in the bank from stones/holgate/ mawson, for once in our history we could say no if we wanted but it appears we don't want as a club yet again.
I take it you'll be happy with our subsequent drop in form and league position if CH and bree are sold will you? Hmmmmm......

You mean we should adopt the approach that put us into administration.

Promotion didn't, you couldn't be more wrong if you tried. I believe the squad that took us up were assembled for about 200k? It's the subsequent decisions when parachute payments weren't 'all that' after we were relegated that put us into administration I think you'll find.
What is your point exactly? Have you read my post properly? I kinda think you haven't tbh.

Money has to be spent this month on permanent signings to show some ambition or I fear ill feeling towards the board will come to games (where's our money gone, where's our money gone like when foreign owners sell assets and replacements aren't the same) and our season will start to go downhill which will impact season pass sales for next season and the quality of player we can go for.

As a fan of Barnsley all my life, I wish to see my team play at the highest level possible. That is my thought process. We have/were in with a chance with this current side this season yet it seems to be getting disassembled once again in a transfer window. To say I'm not happy is putting it politely I'm afraid. To quote an all too often used phrase, 'same old Barnsley!' 'Sigh'

We are one league off the big time, no matter how small a club we are compared to others we should be striving to be as high as possible. Otherwise what is the point competing in this league at all?

Totally agree. It was 'daring to dream' that got us into administration along with poor financial management. We would all love the excitement of the Play Offs but we are a million miles away from being equipped for the Premier League, either on or off the pitch. We haven't even got a CEO! If we are able to build a war chest now for recruitment in the summer, we will be able to compete better with the bigger clubs with rich owners and parachute payments for better quality players. We can then build towards a stronger challenge next season.
I will be absolutely gutted to lose Hourihane and Bree will probably shed a few tears tbh. However the club has to be run as a profitable business to ensure our future as a Championship team. It is no good bleating about the contract situation. What is done is done and hopefully lessons have been learned for the future.

Connor will be difficult to replace, but as much as I rate Bree, we have Yiadom to come back, Jones from Everton to cover left and right back. Perhaps another left back, midfielder and forward and we can continue as we are. Certainly going to be interesting and I for one remain optimistic.

That's just it, I've followed Barnsley over 35 years and they never learn, cept for that one season 20 years since. That's why we'll never make it back to the prem again, back to my original stance of that corner-shop mentality
