RIP John. One of the best vocalists that King Crimson ever had. Died on 31st Jan 17 at the age of 67

Here's one of his performances of Starless - Poland in 2003. Stunning (if you are a Crimson fan, like me :))

That one slipped under the radar.

I'm a big Crimson fan, particularly the early years (up to 1978 - Red).

2 Crimson Bassist/Vocalists gone in the space of a couple of months.

    RIP.

Always loved his vocals. Just found out by chance when watching a YouTube performance of Starless this morning.

Boz died in the mid 2000s, so that's 3 Bassist/Vocalists gone. According to Wikipedia, the only other member gone is Ian Wallace (drummer). So the rhythm section seems to be the most dangerous....

I never saw King Crimson, but I did see UK in Newcastle in about 1978, they were excellent.

I've just been indulging myself with about an hour of his live performances in various places. I'm with you about being a big fan of the early years. I love their music, though I tend to drift off a bit when they get into the heavy jazz stuff.

Prefer the melodious sections like the beginning and end of Starless, the whole of Poseidon and Epitaph and then the smash you on the head tracks like In the Court of the Crimson King. Privileged to say that I saw them at Sheffield City Hall in the Crimson King period.

John Wetton used to be a regular visitor to the Classic Rock Society stages in Rotherham (Herringthorpe Leisure Centre and Oakwood School). The CRS still promote shows at Wath and Maltby. His band on that recording is made up of John Mitchell (Lead Guitar) (Ex It Bites (he replaced Francis Dunnery), Kino and The John Mitchell Band etc), Martin Orford (Keyboards) (Ex Jadis and IQ etc) and Steve Christie (Ex Jadis). All the above musicians along with their bands appear regularly at Classic Rock Society gigs. If you enjoy this type of music, then I highly recommend a visit. The next gig is at Montgomery Hall, Wath and is their annual presentation evening. Pendragon will be playing live, and if you have not heard them before and like top quality guitar playing, they are a real treat.

I have an old scrapbook, which has me saying John Wetton was my favourite vocalist.

On Starless and Bible Black, he was peerless. When King Crimson have John Wetton singing on Nigh****ch, with Fripp making his guitar melodically yelp and growl, modern music is at its finest.

I'd like to thank him for touching my soul. over the last 40 years or so.

see http://www.classicrocksociety.co.uk/ for details of all their gigs, news and membership details.

I am no longer a member. I lost interest when they started promoting gigs outside our area, but I have my ticket for the Pendragon gig and 3 more. I am particularly excited about Red Bazar, who are new to me, but I have their first CD and they are right up my alley.

I really love this music and tend to get a bit carried away with my enthusiasm. Many people believe that the genre is long gone, but that is far from true. There are plenty of the old guard still enjoying there music, but more importantly, there are always lots of new young bands carrying the torch for good musicianship, which is after all what this type of music represents. Try and listen to some of the bands listed on the CRS gig list on Spotify. I forecast that you will not be disappointed.

Think I was there that night. My memory is of the audience shouting out and wanting Robert Fripp back. Or was that a later gig?

I assume you mean, who are my favourites.

I like IQ, they never let me down. I also like Airbag, Gazpacho, Riverside, Pendragon, Magenta and many others.

I am acquainted with Into The Electric Castle and although the sound does appeal, I have the feeling that it might be the kind of stuff that WWE fans listen to.

Is his other stuff like that too?
