As a snip of a lad i always thought Gerry Stewart was ok. Then along came Peter Springett, followed by Gary Pierce from Wolves (£35,000) which was a major signing for the time. Then there's Martin New, Bobby Horn, Clive Baker etc......... In my opinion dave Watson was a bloody good goalkeeper that got my vote although he was a tad dodgey on the cross situation. Great penalty stopper though!
RE: wathing ???? you mean thort tongue surely ! Dave Watson for me, although I'll never forget the way he, as well as the whole team threw a massive wobbler to turn a 3-0 into a 3-3 against Ipswich!
RE: in the last 8 minuites nt he he,aye who could forgetthe ipswich debacle, ive never been comfortable watching the reds after that game, unless we are 5 nil up with only a minute left.
RE: Alan Hodgkinson May have looked a dwarf but must have been about 5ft 10in. At one time Sheffield had both England keepers ie Hodgy and Springett. Springett used to wear a yellow shirt during league games as no 1 England keeper as was the custom at the time Recently Hodgy was the Scottish goalkeeping coach. A great character.
RE: im not say Harry Hough was the best ,Because There is no such thing in my BOOK i saw harry save a Penalty, then save the rebound i saw him do it not once but twice Im sure Harry was not bothered about being the BEST all would interested inand saying i will take some Beating come on try me Well Done Harry but i scored against thee
And mine If only he was a few inches taller, but then again he probably wouldn't have ended up darn at 'well then!
In my lifetime got to be Watson, always looked agile and just meant that the rest of the team, especially the defence, could be more confident knowing that a keeper of that quality was behind them. Am I right in thinking he played at U-21 England level? I think he could've gone a long way and it was a real shame he got injured.
Gerry Stewart Leceturer at Leeds Metropolitan Uni didnt even know that he played for us until he mentioed it....a great bloke
