The Stroke Unit at Barnsley Hospital is rated one of the best in the country. I can certainly vouch for that. You might have read in last week's Chronicle that it is under threat of closure. All done. My mam's used it and can't speak highly enough of it (actually probably given the severity of her stroke it's probably down to them that she can speak at all).
I sign enough of em mate, but I doubt it they have any direct effect by themselves. I think causes use them to reinforce more political actions. I think they work well spreading awareness and uniting people to a cause, like this one.
Aye mate, without such fast help, I may well have cabbaged. Even more-so, obviously. And how hot are the nurses? I didn't miss that little detail..
It's the hyper acute stroke unit that's moving from two district hospitals barnsley and Rotherham. Basically it'll be more beneficial for patients to go to the bigger units where specialist care is more readily available than local hospitals. Bigger pool of resource and more likely to get proper guidance treatment you need rather than sub optimal within a general hospital.
The problem with that is that other areas of the country have done a similar thing and closed the units to create more regionalised specialist units BUT they set a maximum travel time of 30 minutes to the unit as that is crucial time. London for example went from I think 23 or 24 down to 8 units but set a maximum travel time of 30 minutes citing how crucial that was. The closure of Barnsley sets an expected travel time of 45 minutes which is the maximum that the report for Yorkshire recommends. My question is why is 30 minutes so crucial for Londoners but when it comes to the people of Barnsley it is fine to expect a 45 minute travel? How many people are going to die or have their long term health seriously impacted because of this additional 15 minutes? Why should we be put at risk more than others simply because of our postcode?
