First time I have done it. Doing it with my wife and my brother in law (who is an experienced walker) my 16 yr old step daughter and her friend. Weather looks good and obviously hoping to get round under 12 hours for the 24 Mile walk. The thought of constantly walking for that length of time is probably my bigger concern than the physical side of it. Never done so much varied exercise in a year. Looking forward to it though.
Good luck. Heavy rain at times on Friday, so, abbreviated notes from my message earlier in the week. 1) Don't set off like a house on fire from Horton up Pen-y-Ghent 2) Bottom of Pen-y-Ghent along the vally was very boggy in parts. The ambulance landed twice last week, once to take away a broken leg victim in that very stretch. 3) The stretch from the bottom of Pen-y-Ghent to the viaduct and start of Whernside is longer than you think. A good couple of hours. 4) Everybody seems to stop for snap at the viaduct. Good atmosphere and banter, but don't stop too long. You'll seize up and lose momentum 5) Whernside is a long drag up with little chance to get your breath. Worth it for view from top. 6) Please be careful coming down Whernside. It is steep and twist, and it is tempting to get a jog on, but PLEASE, it is slippy on the stone. Also hard on the knees. 7) Stop for water and a pint of Orange Squash at the farm before the Old Hill Inn (between Whernside and Ingleborough) 8) Ingleborough is a tough old climb, especially with 18 miles in your legs at this point. 9) When you get to the top, you have a good 5 or 6 miles back down to Horton. Don't underestimate it, especially if dehydrated. Watch for cows / bulls in the fields before Horton. 10) Best advice. If you leave at 8pm, mentally prepare yourself that you might still be walking at 8pm. Gives you a sense of perspective. 11) A pint in the Crown is a must. Good luck, and enjoy, it's an epic day out and a trophy walk to be proud of. It is not easy.
It's great, but the bit after Ingleborough seems to drag on forever. Mentally you think you've finished after the third peak but it's still a long trek back to Horton.
Agreed with Andy. I've done it twice approx. 30 years ago when I was in my early 20s. Once clockwise, the other anticlockwise if you see what I mean. As Andy says, don't underestimate the walk off Ingleborough. Also don't be tempted for a pint at the pubs on the way around. Take your time and be prepared for bad weather. Oh and good luck !
Agrree with Andy i did it last year it's tough but rewarding, also doing it again with Reds in the community in 3 weeks. When your coming down the decent back to Horton you will see a signn saying 2miles , be prepared it's disheartening i think someone missed the 1 off the front ! but for warned and all that.
