Non league records from 12/13 season onwards; Stefan Payne - 90 goals in 159 games. Clubs played for Macclesfield, Ebbsfleet, Dover and Hornchurch. Omar Bogle - 75 goals in 152 games. Clubs played for Solihull Moors and Grimsby. Both big strong lads with outstanding records in non league football. Payne's being slightly better. Now I'm taking nothing away from Bogle who has carried on his goalscoring into League 2 with 19 goals in 27 games but I'd argue that Stefan could have had the same impact if he'd taken his momentum into league 2. Payne has looked okay at time but way out of his depth at others. The risk financially with Payne was minimal. I'm not sure we paid anything for him but it certainly wasn't near 100k if we did. Bogle has been signed for around £1 million. That for me is crazy money on a striker who could be better than Stefan Payne. Just remember we paid 500k at least for George Moncur who was proven at League One level and even Peterborough didnt rate him when he moved back down to that level. I was one who 'clamored' for Moncur as he was a name and had done brilliantly. Turns out in the end he didn't have the personality to be patient enough to develop and trust in his coaches. £1 million -panic buy Omar Bogle would have made no sense in my opinion.
Before Payne got injured, the fans were really warming to him. Almost scored at Ipswich, hit crossbar against Northampton with virtually his first touch, hit post against Huddersfield and set up scowen against QPR. I think he's been very unlucky with the timing of his injury against Rotherham. It was a rout in the second half, and he would possibly have got his first goal. Once he starts scoring all his rough edges will be forgotten I'm sure. Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
I hope he proves me wrong, but from what I've seen of Payne, he doesn't look good enough. It'll be interesting to see how he does at Shrewsbury, and how Bogle does at Wigan. Their non-league records aren't everything.
Obviously not, but that was a name many seemed desperate to get and as Chris has pointed out he would've been a massive gamble. The point is that there were very few available strikers who would have slotted straight in at Championship level, so I for one am quite pleased that we haven't just thrown a million pound at a league two striker in desperation.
What about Stefan Payne v Ollie Watkins? Having seen Bogle play I was happy that we weren't interested at the same time he's not the only striker out there is he? It's very concerning that come summer we will only have 1 recognised championship ready forward on the books. We are very short upfront and should have used our methods to obtain one. It only takes a Bradshaw dodgy hamstring to hobble us.
Our recruitment strategy is there to replace the players that we sell to sustain ourselves. Winnall has been leaving for a year so we should have identified targets and acted on them. Not panicking. Planning.
Why are you missing the boat load of goals that Bogle's scored when he made the big step up into the Football League to justify your point? I think his 18 goals this season are far more important than the non-league ones, l know you are comparing him to Payne in this thread who hasn't had that many games in the Football League but elsewhere you are missing the gigantic point that when he's moved up a league his goalscoring has got even better. How many non league scorers do that besides the odd ones? Vardy etc
I think Bradshaw was Winnall's replacement. I'm not saying we couldn't have done with another striker but the discussion here was about Omar Bogle and also the lack of other suitable replacements available.
I'm no scout but Ollie Watkins fits all aspects of our recruitment strategy and that's just me not the spreadsheet
This. Plus Bogle scores so many different types of goal, Bogle is far better with both feet than Payne from what I have seen, He also takes and scores free kicks which I doubt you would see from Payne. I hope Payne does well on his loan and comes back a great asset to us but from what I have seen he isn't as good as Bogle.
I find it difficult to believe that we think it's a good idea that by the end of the season we will have 1 forward on the books who is ready for the championship. I don't believe that there is a lack of suitable replacements. Matty Taylor went for 300k for example
Some clubs use Wyscout. It looks pretty good, fairly cheap for basic functions, quite expensive for the full package. Maybe we should all chip in and crowdsource players? (tongue only partly in cheek) https://wyscout.com/
Re: Queensbury Rules? I think some people have been a bit harsh on Payne. In the few sub appearances he's made he's looked a good prospect and I think with a decent run of games & a couple of goals he will flourish. Be interesting to see how he performs in League 1 for the rest of the season.
I've clearly mentioned his goals this season. Why are you ignoring that to prove your point? I said I would argue that Payne could have done the same had he taken his momentum to League 2. We would have had the same people on here wanting the club to gamble £1 million on Stefan Payne. Imagine that. The beauty of it is both have switched leagues so we'll get to see how they do. Maybe I've missed them but Ive not seen many/any people saying "I think the club should have gone and spent £1m on Bogle"
