Doesn't the number of ties the eventual winners need to win rather depend on which round they enter the competition?

Not really - they are saying that the eventual cup winners win 6 games, if you can find a year when they won more then fine.

Spurs won it as a non-league team in 1901, not sure how many ties they won to get there.

They won 6 as although they joined earlier it was a smaller tournament.
EastStander, just because nobody's played more than 6 games to win before doesn't mean that it's a given that "the eventual cup winners win 6 games". To me that says that it is a fact that all eventual winners, past and future, win 6 games and the structure of the tournament clearly allows it to be won by a team playing more than 6 games. I guess you read it differently from me.

In theory, but in practice, since the formation of the football league in 1888, only one club has won the cup who, using the current set-up, would enter the competition before the third round. Tottenham won it in 1901 and remain the only non-league side to have won it. No 3rd or 4th division club has ever won it.

There have only ever been 7 second division clubs win it: Notts County 1894, Wolves 1908, Us 1912, West Brom 1931, Sunderland 1973, Southampton 1976 and West Ham 1980.

It's not impossible that a team outside the top two divisions could win it. Almost anything is possible. But I wouldn't bet on it.

And even Tottenhams feat wasnt anywhere near as great as made out. They were given byes through most of the rounds and only played i think it was 4 rounds

Don't we hold the record for having played the most games to win the Cup? Nearly every game in 1911-12 went to a replay. As there are no second replays any more it's a record that probably won't be beaten, whether we hold it or not.

I think we also hold a record for having played the most games in one calendar month, which was the month in which we won the Cup. We even played a league game inbetween the Final and the Final replay.

Arsenal v Weds in the late seventies went to four replays with Arsenal, Arsenal going onto the final think they played around 11 games and did the season after when going on to the final.

Did we play 9?
