Do you stick to these and throw away as soon as it gets past the date? Or are you the sort of person who will push the boundaries and rely on the human instinct of smell / look before decided whether edible or not? Or are you totally hardcore, scraping mould off bread, yoghurt etc before tucking in?

I personally prefer to use the human instinct and ignore dates on most things and rely on the smell and look of things to decide whether it's safe or not.

Here's a very interesting article (if you're interested - if not, ignore) http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/a...nge---One-man-boldly-goes-use-dates-food.html

I couldn't claim to be hardcore at anything, old mate.:D
However, I tend to utilise looks, smell & taste dependant upon my hunger pangs!:D

I love the fact this is a Kev b type thread, and the first response is from....... kev b.

As I say, I'm a smell/look kinda guy, however I have been known on a few occasions if I have come to make my work sarnie up on a morning, and not realised the bread was going mouldy, I would try and scrape off the mould (if only a little mould on in first place). BUt this is only last resort and extremely rare.

I used to be really picky as a kid. Now I embrace stuff 48 Hours past its use by date if not dairy.

Don't go so far as to scrape mould off stuff, but pretty much ignore the dates. On some fruit and veg the use by date comes around before it's even ripe! Smell and how it looks tell me if the food is edible. I doubt I'd eat any fish or seafood past a use by date, but by that time it smells rank anyway so wouldn't pass my usual test. Having said all that, I'm a right greedy b'stard and hardly any food I buy gets close to the use by date before I've scoffed it.

Instinct/senses. I don't need a stamped date to tell me if something is ok.

http://www.approvedfood.co.uk/ Dunno if you know the story of the two Huddersfield guys behind that company. They were on Dragons Den a month or so ago and didn't get any backing. But since the episode was filmed way back last May they have grown alot. If you Google about it you should find plenty of articles as they have been in the national press and not just in the Huddersfield Examiner.

We've had 2 lots from Approved Food.
Good stuff at a fraction of the price. And it's not out of date either.
But that wouldn't bother me at all.... if I don't have to chase it round the fridge cos it's grown hairy legs then I'll eat owt.

For most things I ignore the best before dates - on fruit and veg they are hilarious - eggs the best test is do they float - if so bin them if they sink they are still fine - milk cheese etc its pretty obvious - I will cut mould off cheese if it shouldnt be there

tend to play it safe with seafood and chicken though if it looks and smells OK a day or so over I still risk it - if it smells off even in date I bin it

Owt in a jar or a tin - no.

Fresh stuff - a couple of days leeway if it appears OK but look / feel / smell....

My whisky I like to be 10 year aged.

I like mine a bit older than that - 15 or even if I am lucky 21 years is even better :)

You either have a bigger budget or consume less than I do.

Both are quite likely....
