Wearing Rainbow kits this weekend celebrating Football vs Homophobia month. I’m sure this thread will have no arguments...
Oh my God, I just made the mistake of reading the comments below it and feel so down now. I despair at the amount of hatred and intolerance in the world right now.
When you said Rainbow kits I had visions of them playing dressed as Zippy, George and Bungle Good on em...pity it's still an issue in 2019 !
it's highlighting something we should all except and embrace . Its a nonsense really that they have to promote it in this day and age . People are just people good and bad , our choice of sexuallity should be irrelevant . load of ******** and fannys if you ask me .
The answer is in your own question. There are no out gay men in football because the game is so homophobic. I think you know that though.
Well that's what I've heard. A bit of evidence wouldn't go amiss though. What do you think the reaction would be if a current BFC player did come out?
Surely complete indifference would be the most appropriate action? Unfortunately a group of virtue signallers would attempt to turn said player into a cause, showering him with unwanted attention and appointing him as the de facto spokesman on all things "ist" in football. In fact, that's probably the reason why they don't want to come out. They'd never hear the end of it.
It's a nice gesture and the money is going to a good cause but I don't think it will make any difference to people's attitudes. Haters will still hate.
The issue of a straight footballer coming out is never discussed so why are some people pre-occupied with gay footballers having to 'come out' (and where are they 'coming out' of ?) The sexual orientation of our players is their personal business not ours.
Of course it is, but the culture of mens football (sport) needs to change. Just look at Joe Root this week. Having to tell an opponent not to use being gay as an insult. There still exists a stigma within mens sport in particular, and it must be a nightmare if you are that gay man who doesn't conform to type. Of course it's no-one's business, but the reality is that the assumption is everyone is straight unless they say otherwise. Ironically, when I played football for Birmingham City Ladies, the opposite was true, but with less hassle attached.
What type of evidence could there be? To me the most compelling evidence is the lack of openly gay footballers.
Some evidence of homophobic comments or behaviour in dressing rooms or board rooms? Rather than just saying "well there are no out footballers and the only explanation is homophobia". Approximately 2% of the population is homosexual. So out of 5,000 players in Britain that gives us a very rough figure of 100 who are homosexual. Now, homophobic comment coming up - but gay men are less inclined to like football than straight men. Cliched but true. Think of all the gay lads and men you have known and how many of them liked football. Apply that to the 2% and it's not many gay footballers at all. Imagine if you were part of such a small minority of people but also part of a very high profile issue - would you want to draw attention to yourself? I know I wouldn't. Maybe that's why there are no out gay footballers.
Re Joe Root - he was subjected to those comments from a group who are notoriously homophobic. It shouldn't be applied to football in this country.
I'd argue that the same homophobia exists in this country in mens football. I have seen it in non league on a Saturday / Sunday this season.
Are you suggesting that you have to be straight to 'conform to type' and if you're gay you don't 'conform to type?' You are in danger of stigmatising gay men.
