Surely that depends which gay player it was though? I'd be pretty annoyed if we signed Christopher Biggins to play in central midfield, or Julian Clarey in the nets. Reckon Graham Norton would make a pretty good assistant manager though.

Did that 7% have a club in their hands and live in a cave?

Pathetic. Why on earth does it matter?

Years ago I would have understood that figure - although not agreed with it.
But can't understand anyone now being against gay people.
Got to admit tho - and it must be a generation thing - because I'm of a certain age - I have to look away from the tele when I see men kissing mouth to mouth.

I’m pretty certain that Barnsley will have had a gay player at some point.

    Maybe even now.

The 8% of fans will likely be the same ones who think racist or bigoted chanting is perfectly fine, as is getting smashed before a game and being generally a complete arse at games - and will presumably be disgusted at the abhorrent and abnormal behaviour of a gay person, not seeing the irony in their thinking or that it is in fact them that are abhorrent and abnormal.

A player will ‘come out’ soon. It’s a shame that it’s even still an issue, but when it happens I imagine many will follow.

The survey shows that unfortunately our society still has a decent proportion of neanderthalic morons

And hopefully those 8% will be replaced with a better class.

I'm sure I heard rumours that David Currie is gay. I have absolutely no idea if it's true at all, maybe it was just the tache and perm combo.

Also when we signed Jan Molby, my dad's scouse colleague, a Liverpool fanatic, asked if Barnsley had any gay bars as Jan was sometimes seen "on the scene" in Liverpool. Again, I have absolutely no idea if this was true.

To be honest I'm surprised it's as low as 8%. 37% of Americans still back Trump. There's no accounting for some people's lack of....well brains really.

Funny you should be speaking of this. Here is a piece from DUFCs weekly news letter.

Dundee United is pleased to be supporting Stonewall Scotland’s Rainbow Laces campaign.

This year, Dundee United will be showing their support for LGBT players and fans through Stonewall Scotland’s Rainbow Laces campaign. The campaign also has the support of the Scottish Premier Football League.

The Rainbow Laces campaign aims to make sporting environments more inclusive for LGBT fans and players by raising awareness of anti-LGBT abuse. Research carried out last year found that 72 percent of football fans have heard anti-LGBT remarks at games in the previous five years, while 20 percent of 18 to 24-year-olds said they would be ‘embarrassed’ if their favourite player came out as LGBT.

Chairman Stephen Thompson said: “Dundee United is proud to be supporting the Rainbow Laces Campaign. We want all fans to feel welcome and included at our games – football should be somewhere everyone can be themselves.”

Colin Macfarlane, Director of Stonewall Scotland, said: “We’re delighted that Dundee United is supporting Rainbow Laces, and standing with LGBT fans. Many LGBT people want to take part in sport, either as players or fans, but abuse from a small minority makes many people feel unsafe. Wearing Rainbow Laces is a great way to show your support, and to help make sport more inclusive for everyone.”

Follow Stonewall Scotland using @StonewallScot and get involved in the conversation on Twitter via #RainbowLaces.
