    So 1 in 4

Why on earth would any of his team mates or his manager let him take another? That's an appalling record. I could beat that.

    From messistats_ on twitter

Messi's complete penalty stats for club and country combined: 107 penalties taken
    82 penalties scored (77%)
    24 penalties missed (22%)
    01 penalty assist (1%)

102 penalties in regular time* (78 goals, 23 miss, 1 assist)
    005 penalties in shoot-outs (4 goals, 1 miss)

I thought that was pretty awful but apparently in the world Cup only 70% of penalties are scored

All footballers can score a penalty... it's handling the pressure that is the problem.

I'm not convinced you'd return a 75% hit rate under those circumstances....

Probably not, but other professional footballers would.

Barnard still gets criticism for the penalty miss at Wembley yet it was the only penalty he ever missed. I wouldn't want our penalty taker to have missed as many as Messi. Surely both Barcelona and Argentina have someone better at this particular skill. Barnsley have had loads over the years.

I can’t imagine anyone else dare take it off him. Messi has the say in everything for both club and country.

I think Matthew le tissier has the best record in world football ever
    Missed 1 out 48
You can I guess argue how many of those were in so called pressure cooker situations huge games compared to other penalty takers

When I saw you’re post I immediately thought Phil neal must be up there especially taking into account all the huge games he played in
    Never seemed to miss them.
Just did a quick goggle search on him
23 trophy’s , 8 league titles ,uefa cup winner , 4 European cup winners medals , played in 5 scored penalty’s in 2 of them
Played 365 consecutive games in one period of his career
Referred to as the forgotten man based on his achievements

apprently put his medals up for sale and sold them not so long ago as he wanted to give some money to his grand/children
    Different times.

Not being pedantic but they said he'd scored 84 and missed 21 so bit better ratio 84 from 105

Blimey, old mate! You've been busy this close season. Last week, you were an employment law expert in both the UK & Germany, now you're a better penalty taker than Lionel Messi! Is there no end to your talents?:D:D

Jay in “I’m better than Messi” claim. Because that’s what he’s saying. Yes he is.

Even Redfearn missed a couple for us. The only penalty taker we've ever had who I was completely relaxed watching was Neil Thompson. Never even a shred of doubt about where the ball was ending up.

Christ. His run up against Huddersfield is responsible for every subsequent health problem I will ever have in my life.
