First track on the first album I could afford to buy - K-Tel 20 dynamic hits. I bought it cos it had Softly Whispering I Love You by Congregation on it. In those days you had to listen to the record, till you got to the ones you liked.
That was the first record I ever bought, it was the EP version with a long organ solo in the middle which was later cut out and released as a normal single.
Ponders End with John Parr used to do a brilliant version of "You are the dance of ages". Argent's second single "Tragedy" is also a great track.
Loved the Hammond organ sound it made prog rock or Blues sound fantastic , here’s another you’ll remember.
Ponders end first band I remember charging on the door themselves. Rather than getting paid by the venue.
Loved Argent! Rod’s keyboard playing was fabulous - the voice & songwriting (& guitar) of Russ Ballard was brilliant! Hold your head up, thunder & lightening - the superb I don’t believe in miracles (as far as I know, only a live version on Encore) - Music of the Spheres! Russ also wrote Since you’ve been gone for Rainbow.
John Parr for me the best guitarist in clubland in the seventies. Mickeys Monkeys. ( my favourites of that era) Bitter suite and Ponders end. Made it in America. With St Elmo s fire, which was a massive hit. But also renowned in America for his contribution to the Gillett the best a man can get. Advert. Saw him supporting Journey in Newcastle several years ago. Still performing to this day I believe.
