I've just been reading about the now defunct 'Intertoto Cup', and I never realised that entry into it was as simple as applying and being the highest ranked applicant in your country.

The year following our Premier League season, Crystal Palace (who finished below us in the Premier League) played in the Intertoto Cup as "they were the only English team to apply". We missed a trick there I reckon. Being an English team, Palace were given a bye to the 3rd round, so were only 3 ties off a place in the Uefa Cup.

    Come on Barnsley? No ambition

I remember the Anglo-italian cup but we never played any foreign teams, I think Sheff United did.

We were close to Europe when we lost against Cardiff.

I went to the Grimsby and Derby games in the Anglo Italian. I’m definitely counting them as watching the Reds in Europe.

I also count the game between Man City and EB Streymur as Barnsley in Europe. That being said, I watched the game on TV.

Grimsby is definitely a foreign country!

Does anyone remember the Texaco Cup.

We played a few "Foreign" sides in that. Leicester, Derby and we pumped a certain Sheffield club. Their Tony Currie never got a shot of the ball.

I thought we won the European Cup (or its predecessor) in 1912/13, having "qualified" by virtue of winning the FA Cup.

We did, 23 Barnsley fans were deported that day too for throwing the cannons overboard on the way home.
