I’d take Barnsley over London any day. People make the place for me and London is absolutely chock full of ignorant, self serving t*ssers.

I don’t see what’s too wrong with Barnsley myself, add to that the centre is getting renovated and it can only get better from here.

I suggest you visit, you’ll be surprised how much greenery water and wildlife there is.

Amd let’s be fair... how many lakes fields and woods are in Barnsley town centre?

if you want green within half an hour, with Kent and Sussex on your doorstep and so many lakes and rivers, worlds your oyster.

But of course you could be somewhere like Bristol, Norwich or Salisbury... just because people are used to perceiving Barnsley is some unknown haven of paradise... doesn’t mean you can’t be open minded to see that other places have more going for them.

Tbf I love Barnsley. When we was back and forwards between here and Derry when I was a kid It was horrendous. I love the tarn. I can’t walk to shop with my hood up on my old street without getting stalled by the police. Asking why have I got my hood up?...hmmm it’s hammering down?...also remember for paddy’s day after my 18th. I went clubbing there...got cornered at wall by the security outside a pub as they didn’t want to let me in. Till I had to go to my uncles to get my passport to show them I’m actually from there as I have Barnsley accent ;)...

I love the tarn and been able to walk streets and say hello and talk ballacks to whoever I want!

To be fair Barnsley town centre definitely had a bit of a run down to feel to it a few years back but the opening of restaurants and trendier bars plus the face lift it desperately needed as given it a new lease of life, I love the place now....so much so I’ll be visiting said bars this afternoon :p

Yep, just to balance this up, I think we all realise that there are many better places to live than Barnsley, and of course many worse. It's simply a matter of taste, we're all different and have different opinions. Some people love London and surrounding areas, for example, others (I'm one of them) hate it. I'd rather live in a toilet. But that's just me. I'd pay not to have to live there.

As others have said, Barnsley is changing. It's always been a fairly ugly town in beautiful countryside, but the recent town centre changes are slowly having a positive effect. Eating out in town is a real pleasure these days, but obviously it can't be compared with nearby big cities like Sheffield and Leeds.

I do think it's sad when people leave our town and then criticise it from afar. Some people hardly ever visit, so they lose touch and think nothing changes. Many people come here for work reasons and end up staying, you only have to look at some ex Barnsley players to see that. My first wife moved here in 1981 from Sussex, under severe pressure from me, with much apprehension. She's still here and will never leave. I'm sure there are plenty of stories like this.

well if the Hull followers are of the opinion that Barnsley is a S h i t hole... then they must not have ever been to Newport.

Is she buried under the patio?

Agreed, there's just no comparison for me. I often go out wild camping in the Peaks and Dales, and in the North York Moors too. Scenery only rivalled by the Lake District, in my opinion of course.

Your are not wrong BLP. Once talking to a lad who worked for the Hull City Council Works
Department. He was telling me that back at their Depot they had a piece of kit that enabled
them to use a computer based system to cut plate glass to required sizes. They were buying
stillages of glass direct from Pilkington Glass at St Helens as they had a demand of circa
£1 million to repair broken windows on the Bransholme Estate alone. !!!

The only place I know where if you protect your property with barbed wire, you have to add razor wire to stop thieves nicking the barbed wire!!!

also the Scottish highlands, Brecon Beacons, Orkneys, Snowdonia, Outer hebrides, Gower peninsula, Scilly Isles are great too. Not been overseas for over 20+ years. did all that when I was younger and with the RAF... We realised how beautiful the British Isles are and how little we had seen of them..... so the last 20+ years we have been putting that to rights.

I don’t know if anyone watches that documentary shot at Barnsley hospital but having lived near selby for the last 25 years it really does show that what makes our town special is the people. Can’t match the friendliness and humor of Barnsley folk. We’re still referred to as townies up here as we didn't grow up in the village, and there’s a marked difference in friendliness amongst those of us who moved in and those who were born here. Best folk int world come from tarn.
