So are you saying we "dominated" against Sunderland and Plymouth?

I don’t get this fearing anyone in the play- offs malarkey either. The last 2 play-offs we have been involved with, which have seen us play the first leg at home, but that didn’t stop us from reaching the final. As I remember, we entered the 2006 play- offs in poor form and lost the home leg to Huddersfield. Coventry game apart, We are no doubt in a poor run of form.

Yes, I thought Sunderland were poor and first half could quite easily have seen us go 2 up. Plymouth played well and had chances, but I felt we largely controlled the game and had more chances and efforts on goal.

Overall it's been a decent season. We've been the better side in most home games, but frustatingly we've let too many teams off the hook, mainly through poor finishing/decision making in the final third. That said, poor finishing is part and parcel of playing at a lower level. We've seen some spectacular misses by opposition players, so it's not just us.

We have also had some bad luck. Moore's injury, poor decision to suspend McGeehan, atrocious weather for the Sunderland game which I think we would otherwise have won. Somewhere in a parallel universe, there's a Barnsley side that's a dozen points ahead of where we are now.

But all we can do now is get behind the lads for the final push. We'll either get there or we won't. Fingers crossed...

Exactly, whatever your opinion is on how the season will pan out, the team deserve and need the support more than ever now. Get behind em, COYR

We'll have to disagree on the definition of the word "dominate".

Going on shot count, which i know isn’t everything but gives a general idea of how the game went.

    Gills - 25-7
    Walsall - 13-12
    Dons - 11-4
    Plymouth - 19-10
    Bristol - 11-11
    Southend - 17-7
    Donny 16-10
    Pompey 18-9
    Sunderland 14-6

Looks pretty dominant to me, excluding the games like Oxford, Accrington, Bradford, Scunny where we’ve battered them.

Agree. I have enjoyed this season more than any season I can remember in the championship since the days of Harry Bassett. Nice to feel like we are one of better teams for a change.

With our shoot on sight policy I would take those stats with a very big pinch of salt. How many of those were high and wide from Thiam alone?

In my view we have been one wise old pro from turning some of the games we haven’t won.

I support the youth policy fully, but even one bit of experience and guile to have about the place would have been of huge value.

As for the season I don’t believe some folk. Compare it to last season and the second half of the one before.

We’ve added only youth and turned in some excellent performances. For a side of average age 23 to lose only six games and none at home is quite an achievement.

That said we’ve been on a downslope for a while form wise. I don’t think they’ll achieve top two, and we might not even be third, but nobody will want us in the playoffs.

We might not win them, but it won’t make it a bad season. I didn’t expect top two before a ball was kicked, having seen all the sides I think we should have got that though - naivety costing us at times as there have only been very few really bad performances.

Overall whatever happens it can’t be seen to be a poor season no matter what happens from here.

No surprises there then. You have to attack and create openings to shoot, irrespective of where the balls ends up. Or doesn’t that count?

You do. But taking pot shots at the smallest opportunity is not an indicator of dominance. Neither would possession stats unless where on the pitch the possession has been.

As my posts on here reflect - I have never once been convinced about us this season.
I’ve had loads of stick about my posts after we have won.
We just don’t look like a promotion side.
But neither does anyone else in this division.
We have relied heavily for results on the centre backs and goalkeeper.
Too many shots closer to smashing the floodlights - than they are at smashing the back of the net.

‘ opportunity’ is the key word , creating lots of them. You don’t create them in your own half that’s for sure.

Many of our shots are not opportunities, they're a 1 in a 100 chance of scoring. They're actually a waste of an opportunity. We give up possession in the opposition half by leathering it into the stand from a position where it's almost impossible to score.

There was a thread posted the other day linking to some stats showing we'd had almost 100 more shots than any other team in the division:
    http://www.footstats.co.uk/index.cfm?task=league_full

We haven't got the most shots on target though, that's Luton, top of the league. Nor have we scored the most goals, there are 3 others with more than us.

We do have the most shots off target in the division - 400!!!! An average of 10 every game. At least 100 more than almost everyone else. 10 times every game we give up possession by shooting wide.

The number of shots we have is a poor way to judge the way a game has gone. If it was a good indication, it would translate into goals, but it clearly doesn't. Sunderland have taken 200 fewer shots but scored as many goals.

The games Conan mentioned we did not dominate, and the number of shots taken is not an indication that we did. It's just what we do, we shoot when there's little chance of scoring.

There is one stat in that link that really is exceptional and sees us top of the league - Goals Against. Because Lindsay, Pinnock and Davies have been superb this season. They've made sure that when there's not a lot between the teams we don't lose. Sometimes this season, we've blown teams away, but it's not been all that often, particularly at home, and those three have made sure we've got a result.

That’s what xG is for and we’ve dominated most games on that too.

For me it’s been one of the best in my 50 years of watching. Maybe a bit bizarre but the best I’ve seen us play all season was up at Sunderland. We went 3-0 down very unluckily in my view but then played some absolutely fantastic football for the rest of the match. Unlucky to lose in the end. Sunderland lads I went with still say we are the best team they have seen this season.
I do bemoan the loss of Potts and lack of another striker but some on here condemned us to relegation again at the start of the season (you know who you are!) and have been delighted with our first defeat in twenty.
