Just seen on Twitter that he has passed away. His was the first voice on radio I associated with matches at Oakwell when I started watching Barnsley around 1980, and I always found him fair and balanced. His voice passed the time in the car to home matches and the journey home, and in the house when we were playing away. Praise and Grumble was his idea and many have copied it since he started it. Apparently he remained active in local Sheffield sport, especially bowls, after his retirement. RIP to a decent man.
Yes he was the voice I remember traveling from matches trying to get a signal on small transistor lol. Can remember one phone call to him from a Barnsley fan when he asked him about the match the Barnsley fan replied first half was EVEN and second half was EVEN worse. Bob always referred that conversation when he was asked to reminisce about the programme. RIP Bob and commiserations to your family you’ve left great memories.
A wonderful broadcaster who always spoke well of the staff at Oakwell. P. or G. was much shorter in those days and you had to be succinct otherwise he'd cut you short - you either praised or grumbled, you couldn't do both. It was followed by the non-league round-up and everything was over and done by 6pm.
His was the first voice I remember in days I used to listen to Radio Sheffield. Seemed a genuinely top bloke. RIP Bob Jackson.
Here here. RIP Bob-spent many a time listening to away matches with earphones plugged in to stereo. Top man.
when post-match radio was worth listening to, hardly ever listen to it now, was mostly drivel, do the same old people ring in week in week out spouting off? i lost interest when it was 30mins of brian the blunt & pits'moan fowl
