The wife and I are thinking of buying a holiday home abroad and going on a place in the sun I have £120,000 with a riddle room of another £10,000 we are starting to get old I was 71 on Saturday the winters in England, we are dreading as the older you get the nesher you get. It's more for the winter sun can anyone advise me of the best places and warmest in winter and will this Brexit shytshow penalize me in Europe.
Seville in southern Spain has average December and January highs of 17 degrees Celsius. Further south the Canary Islands are 20+ all year round. Brexit has shafted all of us so while I'm not familiar with the specifics of buying a holiday home and travelling post-Brexit, I'd be stunned if it wasn't harder.
Hmm! That amount of capital would buy you a fair few holidays or even long winter lets. And you wouldn't have to worry about paying for the upkeep of a property in between?
Neighbours in a similar position - they decided to invest their money in a local Barnsley property which they rent out - from the income from the letting last winter they rented a property in Spain. Think they're heading for Cyprus this winter. Seems a lot less hassle than buying a property abroad.
If I got a property I would let it out during the summer to pay for the upkeep, and live there during the winter months. anyway thanks for your input.
I could riddle up and down the face in between the chocks and the panzer without going into the gob and I never got Ill.
We have a place in Tenerife & it`s warm all year round. property wise Tenerife is expensive compared to mainland Spain so it depends what you are after for your budget.
You will get more for your money on mainland Spain ad opposed to the Canaries. Also you need to consider mainland Spain you can drive there Quite easy. We're in Tenerife for 200k you will get 2 bedroomed apartment. As previous posted mate why not do a long rental thru air bnb . Your not committed to all the red tape when you sell or leave it to your family .
Hi Colliers, bear in mind that the old way of staying for 5 or 6 months in Spain during the winter months is now no longer allowed for UK citizens. It's now for no longer than 3 months, you can stay for 90 days in any 180 day period, then have to return to the UK and wait until you've served your time out of Spain before you can return. It can be complicated but there are apps or programs that can work out when you have to leave Spain, and when you can return there. Also you will pay property tax to the Spanish government for your property being rented out. Even if you don't rent it to a single soul you still have to pay a "non residence" tax every year. Youll also pay the IBI (council tax) every year whether in residence or not. Even if you don't use any water (because you're not there) you will be charged a monthly standing charge, same with the electricity. Bear in mind also that if you stay 90 days in Spain, go back to the UK and then next week fancy a trip to France for a few days-you can't. The 90 day rule applies to all Schengen countries so it's time spent in total in those countries added together. As you say, a sh1*show. I hope this isn't putting you off, I'm just explaining what the facts are. Everything is doable, it's just more difficult than before Brexit
Thank you Lordtyke, I take in what you say, it makes a lot of sense, It is difficult that's why I asked for help and advice and you certainly have given it me in spades, It looks like a no go as £120, 000 is a lot of money to wast working doubleuns Satdis and Sunday's wheeling and dealing for ni on 50 years I think I'll have to think of sumat els for me and t'owd girl.
I would second that. You can spend 90 days at a time twice a year with 90 days between them . £110k is not likely to get you much and the pitfalls and hidden costs even before Brexit are considerable although not insurmountable. I know little about property tax etc in Spain but renting over the winter/cold period in the UK seems a good option.
Could you do 90 days in say Spain then do another 90 in France or do you have to leave the EU after that time?
