does anyone think we will play 4-5-1 this season with the amount of central midfielders we seem to be signing? It's a much safer formation than 4-4-2

Yes. I've thought it since we were linked with Brad Potts. Williams, Moncur and Mowatt looks the likely trio, at present, then who knows when McGeehan gets fit.

If he wants to play Mowatt 1 up top is the only way he can do that really.

I'd rather we stick to 442, we always seem to fare better with that formation. Nice to have the options to be able to switch it around though and I think that's what we need.

Maybe 4-5-1 in the sense of having someone in a deep No. 10 role, which I'd still call a 4-4-2 as the front two would still interchange. Hecky tried 4-5-1 a few times last season and it didn't work, Johnson persisted with 4-5-1 through our worst run of form in a lifetime before switching to 4-4-2 to give us our best run of form in a lifetime so I don't know.

Suppose it is a different group of players and we have to make the best of what we've got rather than shoehorning them all in to a familiar system, if we get a solid second striker though there's no question we should be sticking with 4-4-2.

Moncur is the perfect number 10.
He loves getting forward & supporting the strikers, he has probably the hardest shot of anyone at the club too, he isn't the same player when he hasn't the ability to get forwards & cause a threat.
Think he will provide his share of goals this season

    Looking more like 2-7-1.

Think Williams the midfielder might be a better shout

Heckys gone on record saying he doesn't like the No10 role..." just a mid-fielder that does not want to run back and defend" he says

He doesn't like defensive mid-fielders nether ...All his mid-fielder have to be able to attack defend and tackle was his words yesterday

Another way to look at it, is that last season (post January in particular) we had few game changing options on the bench. An extra couple of strikers, and midfield players could help that out.

For argument sake, if you look at a game like Reading or Huddersfield away which was on a knife edge for the majority, that ability to bring on an extra creative player could have been the difference between us winning or losing a game. A midfield pairing of say Moncur and McGeehan, could be enhanced later on in the game with the introduction of Mallan or Mowatt for example.

Did folk hear Hecky yesterday when saying.... that he doesn't like a mid-fielder going... "looking for tackle's for the sake of it and pulling themselves out of position while doing so... its a pointless waste of time..just tackle when needed simple"..

Now I wonder who he could have been on about..??

What is it Barcelona play? 4-6-0? I can absolutely expect to see us playing 4-5-1. We have the attacking personnel to do so, Mallan, Moncur, Mowatt, even Hammil and Isgrove behind a single forward.
