The wife and I have signed up to give 1% of our disposable income to charity. Any suggestions for suitable recipients in and around Barnsley? I suspect it will be more useful there than here in the south. Food banks, homelessness, hardship and the like are our top priorities.

All charities are big business now, ive lost count of the amount of people who worked as volunteers but got sick of the money creamed off by the man/men at the top. I. I like to give to air ambulance and postrate cancer but i still wonder how much they actually get out of it.I also take food to the food bank then the needer do get it.

Not all Charities are. I work for a charity (Disability Sport Yorkshire) that has been established for 25 years. We're entirely not for profit, and we get no core funding from Government or Sport England. We have to fundraise and get grants for everything we do, and so I can guarantee that any money coming in is spent on the purposes of the charity (running projects and events to support disabled people who live in Yorkshire). We are clinging on by our fingernails to survive.

In answer to the OP, @italrosso there are quite a few charities in the Barnsley area (Barnsley Independent Alzheimers and Dementia Support, Barnsley Churches Drop in) that have already been supported by the West Stand Bogs and/or the Supporters Trust- so you could perhaps get a steer from Dyson or Ray or Hicksy as to which charities spend the money as you'd like to see it spent. If you're stuck for ideas Disability Sport Yorkshire would gladly take a donation!! We're not just about Barnsley though so, you may wish to check some of the others out first.

    I would second this suggestion.

The Barnsley Hospice were brilliant with my Grandad when he attended. What a lovely thing you and your wife are doing too by the way.

Creative Recovery do a lot of good for mental health.
But I agree, cut out the middle (tax) man and just give it in person.

BIADS. Local charity for local people run by volunteers - All money put in goes directly to the care of Barnsley people suffering from Dementia and their carers.

These guys broke away from the Alzheimers society precisely becuase they were putting a shift in raising the money and the benefit was going to big cities and salaries of managers in the charity.

Might be telling you stuff you know but whoever you decide on you can sweat that 1% by workplace giving / giftaid / claiming the tax back through a tax return and re-gifting the refund.

Joan, who is one of the long term volunteers in the disabled stand, told me she wouldn't have been able to cope with her late husband's illness without their support. (You may remember them both from the Our Dancing Town documentary). Such was the support they gave that she now volunteers for them. I certainly got the impression that they made every penny count.

Giving money out of your wage moneys taken off before tax so its even better for both parties.
if your worried about whats going where there is a registered charity page ,they all have those registered charity numbers.
type in search engine Yorkshire or Barnsley whatever area your interested in.
when the list comes up you can click on them and a snapshot a brief look of there accounts for the year/s is there

As you say most of them are run as a business and people have to be paid admin , Managers ,accountants ,lawyers etc.
what shocked me although that's probably not the right word when looking into this years ago and clicking through the lists of them is that the vast majority of your donation is invested.
guess this makes sense in the long run and money put in investments year on year makes more money for the charitys as those investments are paid out,
just that your thinking is when you decide to donate the moneys taken and you think your " personal donation" makes its way to those people in need as soon as possible which is your reason for doing it.
when in fact its the big picture in reality.
