Just been talking to an ex on MSN Messenger. She happened to mention that she works with someone who's related to Charlie Bishop.

Bishop was in the side when I first started going (94/95.) Does anyone a with a longer memory than I want to share their opinion of him?

I recall my friend cringing every time Bishop got near the ball (but, as 15-year-olds, we hardly had infinite wisdom.) Anyone remember a game when we were 2-0 down at home to Wolves after about two minutes? I think I blamed Bishop for both goals. A man sat behind me shouted out: "Bishop! You stupid, greasy-haired c unt!"

So, was he as bad as I remember? Or is that unfair?

I was young when he played, but remember that the general consensus was that he was crap!

Always good for a low quality "mistimed" tackle once a match.

Machin bought him as one of the (not so) super six in the summer of '91. He wasn't really a regualr that first season. From memory he played quite a few games at full back.

The following season he was a regular at the heart of the defence with Taggart and he did OK. We were a midtable championship side and he was very much part of that defence.

The 93/94 season I thought was his best. He was fast, aggressive, good in the air. Taggart was acting daft and Anderson was too old. For my money he was our best defender. In the 1-0 victory over a very good Forest side, Stuart Pearce and all, he was absolutely awesome.

The following season Wilson took over. Bishop started the season as part of the 3 man central defence with Flemming and Taggart. There was then a bid for him, a very substantial bid, from either a Premiership or a championship club. At the same time he lost his place in the side to Davis. For some reason the deal fell through and he was brought back in to the side for the cup game at home to Newcastle, at left wing back. Part way through the game he just gave up. He pulled his shirt out of his shorts and did f.uck all for the rest of the game. Whether he was pissed off with the deal falling through or playing out of position or both or summat else, I don't know, but there was no excuse. Shocking. He didn't play again much that season.

The start of the following season he was back in the side and although he had a couple of decent performances he wasn't what he once was and after an injury he couldn't get back in the team. Wilson had bought DeZeeuw and had a fit Davis for much of the season plus the emerging Moses and Shirtliff.

That summer he was gone, along with Payton, Archdeacon and O'Connell. To be replaced by Appleby, Marcelle, Bosancic, Wilkinson, Thompson and later Hendrie. Hurrah!

    I think the 6 were

Charlie Bishop, John tossing Pearson, Gareth bobbins Williams, Steve injured for first 2 seasons but turned out quite good Davis, Deniol chuffing Graham and Lee slippy fingers Butler.

I seem to remember him and Viv Anderson colliding

when going for the same ball and allowing Chris Armstrong to score against us after about 7 seconds!

About the time Taggart was getting his 9 match ban thanks to Andersons tactics!

That tackle on Leicesters David Lowe will not be forgotten...

...which left him in our dugout after Charlie had hammered him in a challenge.:pff

    started off well, then....

lost his place due to injury I think. Returned for that Wolves game and was absolutely shocking. One of my mates saw him at Glastonbury one year trolleyed on acid.
