How does it work? I thought that a still was shown on the 'big' screen like with tennis and everyone could see it over the line but that didn't happen today did it?
Also who controls it and watches it to check? The ref gave the goal quickly. Far too quick for a replay to have been checked surely?

I think the ref gets a buzz on his watch if it crosses the line. I may be wrong though.

We don't have a big screen. And in any case in most sports decisions are only shown when the match is being televised.

So it must be constantly tracking the position of the ball then? I wonder how that works with the ball changing when it goes out of the ground and how they turn it on and off as the game stops and starts.

Shame they don't show it on the screen, I'm sure that was the original plan and why they chose Hawkeye over the alternative sensor system

I think there are sensors across the goal line which register if the ball crosses it. Or I might be making that up.

They use Hawkeye which has cameras around the ground (,on all the west stand pillars) pointing at the goal and it gets a 3d image of the goal line. Not sure how it knows instantly though, I'm sure they chose not to use goal line sensors

It’s goal line technology we use, not Video assistant referees (VAR).

I thought it was a laser across the goal line, and if it's breached it signals to the ref. Wouldn't need a tracker on the ball that way

That's the other system which they didn't use. One system had a sensor in the ball which would break the beam when it went behind the line. The other system which h they use is Hawkeye and has a load of cameras around the ground pointing at the goal. That's why they needed to upgrade the floodlights so the cameras near the halfway line can still see what's happening in the goalmouth.

I'm just not sure how those cameras translate into a buzz on the referees watch and can't really find anything to explain it although I have found an article that says they abandoned the idea of showing it on the big screen because of cost.

I gave it from the family stand, you didn't need a camera. Well over.
