How do they actually work and if the club has got it so wrong how do they improve the situation.? If you give a player a 2 or 3 year deal then offer him an extention towards the middle or last say 12 months. If the player wants to keep his options open what more can the club do.We offered Angus a new deal and he signed likewise with the keeper. The power belongs to the players and that's the way it's always been, its nothing new its called the transfer market.
No idea , maybe sign them on a 3 year deal with option for 4th if club want to, with pay increases for performance on the pitch
It's very difficult isn't it. I think the timing of extensions is most important and not wait until there is only 12 months left when the players seem to have a load more power compared to say 18 months left. Ideally we'd like to have clauses meaning we can extend the contracts at our discretion but that's probably difficult to convince players to sign. It looks like Scowen and Watkins will be off in the summer and the club should make them a final offer now on the best terms we can afford and give them until the end of May to sign. If they don't agree to it, withdraw the offer at that point and get on with signing players who want to be here. They are both good players at this level but we've had better before and will do again, neither are good enough to hold us to ransom.
That is exactly what happened with Williams last year, Wellsie, and the club have been castigated for it ever since!
We had the option to extend Willliams contract and chose to do so. Just like Adam Davies. Sent from my iPad using Barnsley FC BBS Fans Forum
Very true but they can't win either way. The worst thing that could happen to us this summer is we spend too much time pissing about only to get mugged off and miss out on targets who will do good for us next season. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Not really. They offered him peanuts after he played a pivotal role in getting them promoted. It wasn't the best terms they could afford, it was the minimum they could legally offer whilst maintaining their ability to claim compensation should he signed for someone eose
Which they waivered to let him sign for free elsewhere. Sometimes things happen where nobody is to blame. They rated him as a squad player, I disagreed at the time and still do now but that's life. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Agreed. What I was getting at was that it wasn't the highest they could afford but was actually the highest they chose which is a very different thing indeed.
The likes of Bradshaw and Moncur have 2 years left. For me, if they start next season well, we should be offering them an extension. Awards the player and protects us.
We don't know how contracts are put together - we can only speculate. However - there are intelligent people at the club that should be able to put something together that benefits the club so we are not giving good players away for next to nothing - while also providing the player with a considerable payment from the club when he is transferred. We all know players are there to be sold on - but the player has to realise this has to be done at the right time and for the right transfer fee. The player must be compensated for allowing for this flexibility. Example - club agrees to pay the player 15% of the transfer fee? As the club hasn't got a vast amount of money to waste - improving the structure of players contracts is currently the most crucial issue facing the club.
If Roberts and Yiadom don't sign new contracts they should be transfer listed this summer and sold on. We can't afford another January like the one we have just had and to let them two have just six months left at the turn of the year would show we have learned nothing from the terrible transfer window we've just had.
My feeling is that our big mistake was not planning on getting promotion. It wasn't expected and wasn't part of the business plan. Evidence to suggest this: Keeping Lee Johnson Purchasing a small scoreboard that was considered 'adequate' for a lower league team Signing development players who have each and every single one been of league 1 standard at best (as demonstrated by the fact that none have played even a bit part this season when we have been desperate. And the big one? Not putting any clauses into any contracts whatsoever regarding promotion to the championship.
