It’s showing a good initiative. People get into a rhythm of supporting their team. Once going regularly it’s difficult to stop. But when you stop going, and thousands have at Barnsley, then it’s difficult to start going again. Then an initiative like Coventry’s is good one.
And if tickets are given away regularly people that pay regularly start to question why should they .
Have thousands stopped going at Barnsley? We've averaged 15k+ 4 times in our history- I'd say attendances are holding up pretty well to be honest
They did the same thing last season against Accrington with the attendance announced as 28k (21,000 actually attended acc to the Coventry Telegraph).
The old nudger chestnut that thousands have stopped going. They haven't. Crowds now are the same they were 40 years ago. People do stop going. New ones start. Natural churn. It's blindingly obvious. Nevertheless I'm all for giving free or cut price tickets away at every opportunity.
Here are our historical average gates. where does it show these missing fans? Our current gates in league one are easily better than the years predating the premier league season, when we were a league higher, in fact I don't think our gates have ever dropped back to those of the pre prem years. http://european-football-statistics.co.uk/attnclub/league/bars.htm
