Can't say I'm chuffed with the decision but with no other natural leaders it kind of makes sense. Let's hope he can get back to his best.
Can we give the lad a chance to put a poor last season behind him now and get behind him... He had a dip in confidence and form last season but from Saturday we need to back the lads.
I've never been a fan of having the goalkeeper wear the armband, as a lot of the time he will be far away from what's happening. It means that the task of asking the referee for clarification, which is one of the things the captain is allowed to do, can't properly be executed. Otherwise it makes sense. He's been there the longest. He's most likely to be in the starting line-up. Another player who would've been a good pick for me is Pinnock. But if the head coach would prefer someone with more experience or if he's planning to do a fair bit of rotating of the outfield players, it makes sense to choose Davies.
Can't say I think that's a good decision. Hopefully it might bring the best out of him. But as a goal keeper he isn't very vocal or commanding of his back line, nevermind as a leader.
I agree it's not ideal, but perhaps Stendel isn't fully sure of his regular XI so to give it to say a CB at this moment may not be possible.
I think pre-captaincy he was absolutely fine for us in goal, never a worldbeater, but good nonetheless. However, when he got the captaincy his performances seemed to suffer. Maybe the armband was a little too tight.
Trying not to look too deeply into it, but, with him just naming him Captain for the Oxford game, he's hoping to bring someone in before the deadline who he thinks is the leader we need, and then make him permanent Captain?
The way it's been worded on twitter certainly seems to suggest that the captaincy is still under consideration. Not sure that means we'll be bringing a "captain" in though.
I think he's got enough on his plate without adding the responsibility of being Skipper as well. Without Hamill at the club I'm not sure who I'd give the armband to now.
Never a fan of the goalkeeper being the captain but that’s the hand that’s getting dealt to us so let’s get behind the team Saturday and cheer them on. As for this meaning Davies being our number one still: if Stendel thinks he’s the best we’ve got then that’s good enough for me, wipe last season out and start fresh with all the lads not just Davies. You reds.
The whole captain thing is over thought. They're all pros, fit and well drilled and know their roles. They should all be encouraging one another all over the pitch. 11 captains.
dont agree with the 11 captains thing. you need a leader, not everyone can handle it. if you have a "head coach" and 4 other coaches, you dont have 5 managers.
Im not a fan of the keeper being captain either - much rather it be an outfield player. I guess the problem for Stendel is until we play a few games he probably doesnt know who is going to be always on the team sheet. Id prefer pinnock but he may well not be playing - also he does seem a bit injury prone
You do know it's only a figure of speech? Not giving everyone an armband to wear. It refers to everyone pulling together and not relying totally on someone bellowing instructions to them. If I thought that 10 players needed constant guidance by a single individual during a game, I'd be very worried about said players characters. All the best captains we've had have been surrounded by good players.
Agree with you. Fact is Davies doesn't do this at all. For a keeper he is very quiet. So doesn't seem a natural choice as the leader.
