Time is running out on the latest American hype job. They are good at hyping people on a list of poor opponents, just like they did with Jeff Lacy back in the day. Very lucky to get a knockout in a fight he'd have been losing on points. Soon be time for Joshua to spark him out.
Weird how the fight was almost an exact replica of Joshua - Klitschko. Tentative early rounds, young guy gets a knockdown, gets carried away himself, ends up hurt & knackered as opponent tries to finish him off, a couple of quiet rounds whilst both guys recover & then young guy gets the late KO. Wilder’s always lacked boxing skills & relied on having the biggest punch in the division but if anything his stocks gone up from last night as he’s shown he’s got a chin & heart. I’d make Joshua a favourite but it’ll be a shootout as Joshua can only fight one way he’ll not be slipping shots & working off a jab like Ortiz did last night
AJ punches a lot harder than Ortiz though and has a reach like wilder. It would be a mismatch imho. Wilder only has a right hand, apart from that he’s bang average.
I would agree with that. My scorecard as more like the Johnny Nelson commentary one with Ortiz around 4 points ahead. How the judges had Wilder in front I dunno. Although it's not a shock that official scorecards were iffy as we see it regularly and it's one of the biggest negatives of the sport. He's still struggling to sell out arenas, whilst Joshua sells UK stadiums. He was being booed by the crowd numerous times for his lack of action. They weren't getting their money.
I don't see how a boxer can be lucky to get a knockout? That is the whole poin't isn't it? But if we are looking at it that way then the Eddie Hearn hype job was very lucky against old man Klitschko. I think wilder/Joshua are very evenly matched and it may come down to the first to land a big one.
He does punch harder than Ortiz but his defence isn’t as good & he doesn’t have the southpaw stance that Wilder struggled with. It’d be a really cagey affair with short bursts of action every couple of minutes
Score cards in usa are terrible. How they gave andre ward the win by 1 round in 1st kovalev fight was a shocker. Kovalec won and knocked him down early doors
I just think Wilder is ****. AJ has his flaws but he’s a level or 2 above wilder. I’m not saying he’s not dangerous though. That right hand can knock out anyone, but AJ is good enough to take it away from him.
Scorecards also reminded me of Joshua - Klistchko cos almost everyone had Klitschko a couple of rounds up but 2 of the 3 judges had Joshua winning at the end. I remember in round 10 last night I’d only given Wilder 3 rounds. It’s weird in America, they don’t seem to care about selling tickets, all the money comes from TV networks & they just fight in New York, L.A & Vegas even if the fighters a nobody there. Wilder sold out over 10,000 in his home town not long ago against a nobody but since then he’s fighting in New York & not doing as many tickets, it’s daft. Last night you had Showtime doing a New York card with Wilder clashing with HBO doing a New York card at the exact same time headlined by a Russian in Kovalev. Just crazy.
Anybody else look at that and think , who the fk is that? although rtbf I have zero interest in watching 2 blokes knocking seven bells out of each other
I agree with you, I think that technically he’s **** every time I watch him but he keeps getting away with it because he’s a huge puncher, has height & reach over his opponents & has lightning hand speed & it’s got him to the stage where he’s knocking out a fighter last night who’s one of the best 5 heavies in the world
Think it also shows the lack of depth in the heavyweights. It’s pretty dire. As much as I can’t stand the pr1ck, Fury needs to get back pronto.
Agree would love to see fury back at his best fury moves very well for a big lad, doubt wilder would get close to landing those wild swings.
