I can envisage a pulley system being very effective, the linesman stands on a wheeled platform and our ball boys pull him along either way depending on where the ball is. Premier league clubs will have rails for the trolley.
Turbo powered Segways are the future. Make the touchline firm enough for the wheels to move freely and give the linesmen a machine each to zoom up and down. Some of them just aren't quick enough to keep up with play so this might work. Trial run for the assistants and, if it works, the ref gets one as well. As soon as nasty players go for them to bleat about a decision just whack it into reverse and gone....
