The police advice thing is very true.

I used to manage the bowling alley there years back (when it was superbowl, before Tenpin bought it out).

Had all kinds of issues, yes from traveller kids but others too - police advised to refuse admission to travellers. Despite us informing them this was against the law - they maintained this advice. The mistake the manager made here was telling her she was being refused because she was a traveller - the official advice was to refuse entry and say management reserve the right to refuse entry to anybody for reasons we didn’t have to discuss.

To be fair, the kids were usually absolute little shi.ts. The adults generally very respectful and fine, probably mainly as we allowed them in when most places wouldn’t. I remember one bloke coming in all guns blazing, raging because we’d kicked his kids and their mates out half hour before.

Raging, until I told him why. Young Tommy and his associates had ruined one of the pool tables by slicing the cloth with a Stanley knife - something he didn’t believe until I showed him the knife (which our door staff had taken off him, we needed door staff even on Sunday lunchtimes). He proceeded to whack young Tommy so hard he flew into the ski-ing machine which was about ten feet away, before apologising profusely for his sons behaviour, leaving £200 cash to repair the table, and asking if he could have his ‘best carpet fitting knife back, the little ******* must have nicked it out me van’. Also told me to ring him if I had any trouble with any traveller old or young, he’d sort it - but that he’d tell everyone to not cause any trouble there.

Never had another issue from any one from the traveller community, at least until the time I left over a year later. He bought me a drink every time he came in after that as well - which was most weeks.

That’s nothing. I remember when ‘No Irish’ signs were common in New York. It was a better time.
