Excellent weekend or day out with things for all the family . My tip would be take a picnic in one of those wheeled shopping bags as the shops and pubs get Chocca . Wish we’d kept the Yorkshire Miners gala going .
Not been myself, but my brother goes most years and says it’s a great day out especially for families. Might make the effort this year, especially if we win automatic promotion wearing a reds top.
I try to get up when I can, and I plan to pop up this year. Always have a good speaker on too - I always enjoy Dennis Skinner, Tony Benn (RIP), Tosh McDonald, or Bob Crow (RIP) and people like that.
Yes I enjoy the speeches some good rallying ones from those above . But if your not political there’s the Brass bands and the banner spotting . There’s a massive fairground and lots of different stalls including antiques . Or you can just sit on the grass and laze the day away .
And if you like a piss up, it's certainly the place. Was stunned the amount of people drinking from the square down to the cricket ground. None stop people with a pint in hand.
Used to love going to the yorkshire miner's galas: donny, rotherham, tarn, wakey and then back round again. Had some brilliant days out, days when it was more about your pals and camaraderie. Durham has become too politicised and has become much less about miners, mining and our cultural heritage. I know someone who has commented on here is too young to have experienced the struggles and strife of the strike and could never begin to understand 'the way it was back then'.
