As if to prove that dreams can really come true in football, there has been a massive shock in the Europa League. Trailing two one from their home leg against Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock, Welsh Non League team Connahs Quay won the return leg at Rugby Park by two goals to nil last night, to qualify for the next round of the competition, where they will now play Partizan Belgrade. The team travelled straight back to Wales after the game. They estimated that they would arrive back in Connahs Quay at around 5am and on arrival, five members of the team have got to work today.
I guess the shock here is that it's equivalent would be Athersley Rec getting into the second round of the Europa Cup after beating a Scottish Prem side Connah's Quay is a very small town just inside the North Wales border.
Connah's Quay came second to The New Saints in the Welsh Premier League last season that's why they qualified for the Europa League. New Saints the most successful team in the WPL - they are based in Oswestry which is the one WPL team based in England! The other 10 teams in the WPL - Caernarfon, Newtown, Bala, Cefn Druids, Broughton, Aberystwyth, Carmarthen, Pen y Bont, Cardiff (ML) and Barry. Ryan Hedges (and the late Gary Speed) grew up in the Connahs Quay area.
Great achievement and yes I guess it will be a shock... To the system... Reminds me of the story of Mick Buttler when he first started playing for Barnsley... Did his Saturday morning shift down the pit then with his brown paper bag in hand that contained his boots walked up to the ground from the bus station to pull on a reds shirt and play in the league game that afternoon... Fair play to those guys and well done
Mate of mine played for Bala when they qualified for Europe. They got narrowly beat by a team from Latvia. He described it as big achievement and felt the standard of football is on par with Conference football.
Today's papers are saying it's an even better achievement than Liverpool beating Barcelona 4-0 in the Champions League. Don't know about that, but it is a fantastic result for the Club.
Last season Connah's Quay lost to a team from Belarus in the first round of the Europa Cup. Home match attendances for C Quay range between 200/300 and that's not including the dog.
