Was also the first time I attended a midweek game at Oakwell, September 1968. It was the 2nd Round of the League Cup and we drew 1-1, before losing the replay 3-1. Millwall were in the Second Division at the time and we'd been promoted to the Third earlier that year. Unfortunately, I can't remember who scored for us. However, I'd never seen our floodlights on before and was surprised just how different the atmosphere was to a Saturday afternoon. Nostalgia agogo. Another dull and pointless post from the increasingly forgetful Statto.
I have a scrapbook for that season . Allan Bradbury from 20 yards . I was there , in a wheelchair , both legs in plaster , in the NW corner on the cinder track . One report says that manager "Mr Johnny Steele changed from his usual 424 to 433 " Would you like any further details ?
And back in the room .... My quote was from the Chronicle and here are some more .... "One lost count of goal line clearances , blocked shots and corner kicks as the Reds powered forward with wave after wave of thrilling high speed attacks ." "It was attacking soccer at it's most rollicking , roisterous , rampaging best and how the fans loved it . They cheered themselves hoarse as the Reds surged ever forward and gave the Oakwell men a rapturous reception both at half time and at the end . They stood as one man to applaud the players off the field and Barnsley fans don't do that sort of thing for nothing ! The teams were , Barnsley : Ironside Murphy Brookes Bettany Winstanley Howard Bradbury Evans Robson Booth Earnshaw . Millwall : King Gilchrist Cripps Jones Kitchener Burnett Possee Weller Conon Jacks Neil Att : 9282
Thank you for that. "Rollicking, roisterous, rampaging", love it! Blimey, I can even remember the Millwall players Bryan King, Harry Cripps, Barry Kitchener, Derek Possee & Keith Weller.
Memory spasm here ... Kitchener stood out for me as he reminded me of Big Eric who was my immediate original hero .
