It's the north end of the Marine Drive, or is it Albert Drive, looking towards where the Corner Cafe used to be. Bet you didn't know about this roller coaster !!! Up to a few years ago I didn't even know that there used to be a pier in the north bay, destroyed by storms over 100 years ago.
Spent many, many a happy hour playing football and cricket on the sand of the North Bay. Perfect consistency for a cricket wicket!
Like you I love Scarborough , if you want some interesting info join the online history society...you get regular interesting emails concerning the town's past ....all foc too . My local heritage society in Mexborough did a piece on a lady named Lavender Lee , who was crowned the first Miss World , prior to WW1 . The article said she was a Mexborough lass and I decided to dig a bit more . It transpired that she was an actress on stage and made a couple of silent movies but had lived and worked in Mexborough for a while...although born in Salford . Her father was a Chauffeur for a family of Scarborough landed gentry and after her acting career Miss Lee became a hotelier in the town ....quite interesting .
Scarborough is a class place and North Marine Road area is definitely the best. Great views down that end with a seaview and much more peaceful. Where the Tour De Yorkshire stage always ends there is the best part of the town and so it's no surprise that's where the finish line is. One of the series of Syndicate with Lenny Henry was filmed there too. Scarborough Flyer is a decent bar for cheap drinks and food whilst watching Sky TV. Also now the biggest chippy in the world has opened so that will be worth a visit........ http://www.thescarboroughnews.co.uk/news/world-s-largest-chip-shop-comes-to-scarborough-1-8256944
I once got w@nked off on the ghost train on the seafront if tht makes you feel any better about going? Hi kids.
The problem with the North bay is that in some respects it is being ruined by commercialism. The apartments on the seafront at peasholme gap are s clean and modern and just don't sit right in my opinion in amongst the older buildings. I always look at scarborough as having two distinct areas. The south bay which is full of amusements, activities and glamour and the North bay which is full of architecture and views with the beautiful peasholme park and miniature railway giving a quaint feeling to the area, even the open air theatre hides away in a wooded area. The introduction of ultra modern apartments dominating the seafront have ruined that to a large extent in my opinion and the further alterations to the 'prmomenade' area will only make that worse. The same goes for the south bay actually with the demolition of the futurist theatre to make way for an indoor flamingo land (which if anything like the real flamingo land will be an overpriced sh1thole). The theatre should have been renovated and the frontage improved but it seems that these days history and beautiful buildings get ripped down to put up bland soulless places instead. Town planners have a lot to answer for imo
