"I am sure Jack himself would agree. He will be disappointed to have let that in." Absolutely. You can tell the people who don't like Luke Steele on here, they all think Jack Butland had a great game on Tuesday. He didn't, he was distinctly average. He let one in that he would have been disappointed with, it was well struck, but it was nowhere near the corner, and he completely missed two crosses that went right through him, both almost leading to goals. That doesn't make him an average keeper, he just had an average game. It would have been a poor game, but he also pulled off a couple of good saves. I think Steele is a great 'keeper, but he has average games too. Occasionally he has a complete nightmare, which I'm sure Butland is also susceptible to. Depending on how long Steele is injured, we'll see how good Butland is over the coming weeks and months. By all accounts he's supposed to be very good and I hope he shows that sort of form when he is with us. But I've already read people proclaiming Butland to be far superior to Steele simply from his performance on Tuesday, which is just nonsense. A similar performance from Steele would have resulted in much criticism and moaning from these very same people. Let's try and have a bit of balance, say it how it is, and not let our prejudices cloud our judgement. Ha! I may as well ask for world peace.
The goal the other night was distinctively similar to Watford's 4th goal a couple of weeks ago. Yet I don't remember many people pointing out that Steele should have saved that one.
Yep, opinions where certain players are consistently good, or perceived as consistently bad when most are just inconsistent giving good and bad performances otherwise they would have been snapped up by other clubs or released. Does it hurt that much to say a player you like/dislike had a poor/good game. Hold yer hands up once in a while and admit you may have it wrong.
It's worth looking at those two goals In the first Luke doesn't reach it. He dives but he doesn't get there. It's hit from right of centre and goes inside the right hand post, so it's always wide of Luke. In the second Jack gets there, but it goes through him. It's hit from left of centre and goes inside the right hand post so goes across Jack and is therefore easier to get to. As for no one commenting on whether or not Luke should have saved it, my match report from the Watford game. http://bbs.barnsleyfc.org.uk/showth...-4-4-2-today-first-half&p=1376068#post1376068 "Perkins let his man go who fired a shot in to the corner from outside the area. I thought Steele could maybe have done better with it." "I must talk about Luke Steele after having a go at Pollitt when he played. I didn't think he stood a chance with 4 of the goals. I don't know if he could have got to the 4th or not as it was right in the corner, but there is certainly a question mark about it. He then made a few regulation saves and a few good ones. The best Championship keeper right on the top of his game might have limited Watford to just 4. Or they might have let another couple in."
