Have the gambling companies weaponised their product and should they be more closely regulated?
In this morning’s paper the highest tax payer in the UK is the founder of Bet365 paying paying 276 million. Said to be worth 9.3 billion. While many gambling addicts live in misery.
They probably won’t be, because they’re major contributors to Tory party funds.

That was a long winded way to get to another dig in at the conservative party

That's a good sign but it should have always been the case.

In the interests of political balance

I'm a Labour Party member, but credit if he actually does something about it. It is totally wrong that Bet 365 should be showing games & I'm unhappy about betting firms sponsoring team shirts. I'm not per se anti gambling, it is one vice I don't have (I have many). Booze companies can sponsor shirts too, but it is rare these days. Tobacco is obviously banned. If tobacco is banned I think alcohol & betting should be also, as it does ruin lives. You could say supporting a football club can ruin your life too though, so maybe I'm talking ******.

Something else that should be done immediately is to publish the odds of any online slots or similar. And when I say publish, I mean any place the 'jackpot' amount is mentioned, the chance of winning should be in the same area, in a readable size.

I think people see a £2 million and think oh I can win that, Someone has to. That's not the case though, they are very rarely won, because the odds are astronomical.

Yes I've always thought it's a dangerous thing, I was aware of it because I use my credit card to pay for all card transactions. I hasten to add I pay off the full balance every month.

I also do, but I've never used it for gambling. Not that I gamble often, but I like a game of online poker every now and again!. Now that I think about it, I'm sure I read that my credit card charges extra interest on gambling transactions. something like 48% APR.

Agreed. I think every roulette table should have a sign saying "WARNING - THIS GAME IS STATISTICALLY UNBEATABLE. IN THE LONG RUN YOU ARE CERTAIN TO LOSE."

The odds of the lottery are astronomical, but people play every week.

I have been told by 365 the maximum amount l can win on any sports bet is £30.
But this does not affect your ability to play casino, games, poker or bingo.

You think that was the only point???? You must be well indoctrinated.

I think it’s immoral that firms like this can buy influence with any political party and use it to fleece addicts. Imagine a football team with “use heroin” on the front of their shirt.

    They are, and they do.

I feel like people know the lottery odds are astronomical though. People playing online slots often don't realise they are fixed odds

I’ve never played it but I do like that some of the funds are spent on charitable causes. I’ve seen quite a few things that have been National Lottery funded.

Bet365 seem to be the whipping boys at the moment, despite their readiness to pay taxes. I watched the whole of the Crewe game on their window and there was no pressure on viewers to bet. People need to take responsibility for their own actions in my view.

I think that the self determination argument carries a lot of weight and in most cases it is a case of personal choice. You could make the same argument about any addiction. The thing is that there are restrictions on tobacco and alcohol advertising and drugs are illegal.
When I watch sport on Sky I’m bombarded with sophisticated advertising for gambling. The gambling firms are allowed to develop new products like in play betting and on line casinos.
That’s what I mean by being weaponised and that’s why I think they should be more closely regulated.
