Could be made a disease. Are we going to get the stage where no one has to take any responsibility for their behaviour and everyone is just a victim? I'm going to petition the WHO to get being a **** on football forums recognised as an illness. If they won't do it it's a deprivation of my human rights. https://news.sky.com/story/video-ga...ase-by-the-world-health-organisation-11722511
Addiction is the disease, the thing that gives the gratification is almost irrelavent. Can you not see how gaming addictions are little different from gambling addictions, which are a huge problem? The whole idea of addiction is that an impulse is so strong people struggle to override and control their actions. So they need help taking responsibility. Don't sneer at the problems of others just because you've decided it's not worthy of giving anyone help with.
Having a disease doesn't take away responsibility for your behaviour though. If classified as a disease then it means more support is available. If I have lung disease then it is my responsibility to not smoke and exercise more and also to take appropriate medication. I would still require help in accessing this medication and other support (pulmonary rehabilitation, smoking cessation).
I worked at a Drug and Alcohol advisory service for a while, all it taught me was people with addictions absolutely beg to be labelled as ill so they can legitimise their addiction and declare it's not their fault. It just gives them a reason to abuse an already overstretched health service. Pro tip: Don't play games for too long and don't blame a made-up illness for your inability to put down a fukcing controller.
In this example lung cancer wouldn't be the disease. Nicotine addiction would. Although to be fair I would think nicotine is more addictive than whatever game is currently popular.
You're missing the point. Not all people addicted to nicotine have lung cancer. They are different things. But someone with both would be justified in having help with both as one exacerbates the other.
I never said they did. Lung cancer is a disease as a consequence of nicotine addiction. Nicotine addiction is not a disease. Gaming addiction is not a disease. Rickets would be a disease caused by gaming addiction.
You can imagine the precedent this sets. "Why were you off work yesterday?" "Don't blame me - blame Nintendo".
Okay well we're clearly not going to see eye to eye on this one. But I'm afraid I'm going to take the validity of opinions of the WHO and leading health professionals over yours. It seems you don't understand addiction enough to have ever suffered from it, which is great and I hope you can appreciate that. You'll never need to feel the shame any addict puts onto theirself. You're way off the mark thinking they blissfully go on practicing the vice and blaming the computer for it.
