The clubs are to blame in my eyes. They are choosing to furlough non playing staff and put them on 80%. If they can afford to pay these players still then pay the non playin staff. If they can't afford it then furlough the players.
I don’t think players are allowed to be furloughed, because they have to carry on ‘working’ - aka training and reporting the results back to the club. Not saying that’s right, but that’s what the law says.
If you can't afford to pay them then you tell them to stop training. I know it's much lower down the pyramid but I believe Yeovil have furloughed the players.
Imagine if they all reported back in (whenever) and looked like Mido. It'd almost be worth signing up to Sky, just to see it.
Just hope all those players who don’t help out can look at the people behind the scenes in the eyes when this all over. I’d be embarrassed and ashamed afterwards.
Get them furloughed. Let them get fat if they want to and when football starts back up let them see their career end and their earning potential fall through the floor when nobody will touch them for being so unfit. Now if they want to voluntarily keep fit in their own time that's fine, let them. They will be the players wanted when football gets going again.
I agree with you 100% - I don't know if clubs will be willing to risk £100m 'assets' like that though.
PFA claiming reducing players money will harm the fight against Coronavirus. There reasoning being players pay 50% tax, so less money for government to help NHS etc. You couldn’t make this **** up. Surely the issues here are the club protecting their assets over disposable staff. And secondly most players could help out directly. What’s stopping a player of ours on say £4K a week going to staff/club and saying take £1k a week to help them. That’s 4K for one month how many staff could that help out from one player alone. This should be about common decency and helping people out when needed.
I think many people are kneejerk reacting here - Gary Neville does more for charity than most and he's currently given up his hotel for NHS workers. I think that because he's so generous; he's making the assumption that others are too (likewise Mr Lineker)
Many players and other professional athletes will normally be training twice (or even 3 times) daily as part of a long term training plan. How does this fit in with the "allowed out once per day for exercise" from the guidelines?
They should but that representation should imo have morals and an awareness of how fortunate it's members are. It shouldn't be purely in the interest of its members regardless of what is right and wrong.
Maybe so , but I think this is going to be the direction of politics or public opinion over the coming years , the widening gap between the haves and have nots which this crisis has clearly exposed . As for Gary Neville's charity , that's great but on the other hand that generosity has been reciprocated across the country by others , take the wonderful take-up of the NHS volunteer service for example . Just because Neville has donated more it doesn't mean he's any more generous than the vast majority of Brits , he just happens to have more money than most .
Do you think all unions should only act in the interest of its members when it’s ‘right’ or just footballers? The whole point of a Union is to act in the interest of its members.
